Nextel... Worth the buy after the merger?

A couple friends who work up at a nearby beach asked if I wanted to work with them up there for the summer. They all have Nextel and use the walkie-talkie feature to talk to eachother. But they each pay for their phone's separately. They say it works great, but I hear that they (nextel) overcharge a lot. I dont need a lot of minutes, because I want to stay with my T-Mobile Sidekick, and use Nextel for the time being.

Would it be worth it to get Nextel? I'm planning on trying it for a couple weeks, and if I think it's worth it, i'll keep it. And if not, i'll return it before the trial period is over. So my point....

Will it worth it to try it at all? How are they priced (hidden charges and stuff)? Do they offer 1 year plans? and if so, How hefty are the termination fees?

see if they offer boost mobile up there, although I'm not sure if boost customers can chirp nextel customers.

Boost is essentially prepaid nextel

apparently those "hidden charges" are given to people with bad credit.

Now to my point...

I have T-Mobile right now... and it SUCKS. I thought the sidekick was good. But its not.

I really am looking into Nextel. I was before, but the merger made me think twice. I hate sprint with a passion, and thought Nextel would fall into the fate of Sprint.

I'm looking into an i850 right now... is it worth it? Will iDEN become a dead/legacy network within a couple years?

From what I recall they plan on supporting iDEN until 2010. I'd be wary of that time frame though, since it seems like the main goal of the merger was to gain spectrum so Sprint could increase coverage and capacity for CDMA voice and data needs.

well as long as it's going to be around for a couple years.. so my contract will be over by the time i need a new phone...

or should i just get that sidekick 3, seeing I already have a sidekick...?

I am new to this forum, Is it okay if I PM you about an i850 i just received. apparently it was or is an i855 and I have loads of questions. I started a thread to see is anyone was familiar with my situation and then I searched this thread...
I did not want to PM you without asking first....thanks

I'll just say there's a reason JD Power and Associates have Nextel marked with 2 stars no matter what area of the country's map you click on on JD's website.

I don't view it as a merger more than I do as a takeover. Anything you hated about Sprint has been tainted to Nextel. There's no shortage of horror stories on the net. Spending two hours on the phone disputing charges on your bill you didn't make, getting passed around to different CSRs til somebody just finally hangs up on you, turning in your phone before the trial deadline and them still trying to stiff you with a ETF by stating that the day you placed the order, not when you got the phone, was counted as days of the trial period. Several hundred dollar phone bills, no itemized phone bills making it harder for you to despute faulty charges and on and on.

Several pages worth here: http://www.ripoffreport.com/results.asp?q1=ALL&q5=Nextel&submit2=Search%21&q4=&q6=&q3=&q2=&q7=&searchtype=0
