The summer might be winding down, but iPhone news continues to heat up. According to a report from AllThingsD, Apple is expected to take the wraps off its next iPhone at a September 10 event. AllThingsD has been right about these things before, so approach this with a little less skepticism than your average Apple rumor.
It is likely this new phone will be called the iPhone 5S, and feature a similar physical design to the iPhone 5. Rumored improvements include a faster processor, longer battery life, and a better camera with a dual-LED flash. The phone will likely ship running Apple’s new iOS 7, and a built-in fingerprint reader has been expected since Apple’s acquisition of AuthenTec last year. Among other possibilities, a fingerprint reader will likely be used to unlock the phone.
It isn’t clear if the September 10 event will also be used to introduce the rumored iPhone 5C, a lower cost version of the iPhone 5 with a plastic back. The next version of Mac OS X, Mavericks, also expected in the coming weeks, is not believed to make an appearance at the iPhone event.
Last year, Apple unveiled the iPhone 5 at a special event on September 12. That makes September 10 a viable date given the iPhone’s traditional yearly refresh. And if last year’s announcement offers any additional clues, we can expect the new iPhone to go on sale within just a couple of weeks of the announcement.
