Nexium side effects?

Could you direct me to your thread,i started Nexium 40mg 2 months ago,and i am getting wicked side effects,my dr says they are not from it,but i think they are.Thank you.

I started taking nexium and the day after i took it i woke up severely sick to my stomach and the food from the previous day before was in my throat. I ended up throwing up and half way choking on the undigested food from 5pm the day before. When i took the nexium the first time i had a extreme burning pain in my chest. This was one 40mg.

I have had GERD for years and have taken many different medications for it. Most recently my doctor prescribed Nexium 40 mg twice a day. I seemed to be tolerating it just fine, but then my stomach got extremely bloated and ached, I felt as if I has arthritis in all my joints, my fingers swelled, and every bone in my body ached. I was also retaining fluiRAB. Night before last, I felt sick. I ended up with extreme diarrhea and was up all night in the bathroom in pain and on the potty. I have taken nothing since and am feeling okay except for still being a little weakened by the ordeal. Because of the GERD, I know I will have to take some sort of acid blocker, or I will end up with another ulcer. Has anyone else had any of the side effects from Nexium?

Of all the PPI's, I had the worst side-effects on the Nexium. I actually ended up with IBS that I still have over 2 years later.

Hi Georgiagem,

I took Nexium 40mg 1 x day for 3 years. It worked very well for my GERD/heartburn. However, I developed extreme side effects. I have a thread with some details of my side effects called "Stopped Nexium and Acid Reflux". Most of the side effects are listed there.

I stopped taking it cold turkey and 10 weeks later, I am still experiencing some rebound. Most of the side effects are gone. I still have some joint pain in one hip, but this may not be related to the Nexium.

If you have any questions, please let me know.

Be well.

I started it the end of August, then was on a round of antibiotics,so i thought it was that, but after it just got worse, and today, forget it! i had my IBS under control, the Nexium made it worse again, and i have muscle pain, joint pain, always dizzy, lightheaded, nausea, its been one thing after another. The thing that really gets me,is when i wake up,its as if my intestines have lead in them, very heavy feeling, its awful.
My dr said he'd lower it to 20mg,i don't know if i want to take that chance.
I am also on Carafate, and i know that can't be doing this.I read Nexium stays in your system 72 hours,so one pill a day,to me? is too much then.
Was put on it for possible ulcer, alot of pain meRAB for bad perioRAB,having cat scan next week.Classic ulcer symptoms,so now i'm afraid it will get worse again. Its sad & in a way i'm glad to see i'm not alone.

I'm also going to go back to my herbal remedies again, they were helping.

I wouldnt take it more than a few months really I do believe acid is about food-so lets rethink nutrition on your Gerd and symptoms and start thinking of ways you can make it better-better doesnt mean okay ill cut out sweets but i can have red meat all i want-better means thinking of your tummy and acid issues as one big wound that you have to heal it means you have to eat bland and very nutritous, you cant eat seasonings or spices or things that irritate all these wounRAB so if your still doing that it may be something to rethink cause you only irritate the wounRAB and make more acid. Eat fooRAB that reduce inflammation and acid alkaline based, eat very bland. For example the bottle of juice you bought, may have citric acid in it.. something you cant have. Or that box of macaroni or haraburger helper..no processed boxes for Gerd or tummy issues with acid. There may be ways to really really clean up your diet. I believe the studies on Nexium do not support long term usage I do not think many trials were done for long term, Ive read a few articles about nexium and other PPI's being linked to some other diseases from long term usage...But Ive done a lot of research and reading over the years of having gastritis. But I know many use it longterm. My only fears of long term usage is what do you get next...maybe arthiritis is part of it. Any drug you take will affect some other organ or body part in another way. Just how it really works. Then again this is someone who wont even take Birth control because again its the same philosophy for me personal. But for an ulcer have you talked to your doctor about Carafate It coats the stomach, but again long term not sure of the trials here.. Id prefer to coat with aloe vera.

* Do make sure you dont have hpolyri, and make sure you dont have any autoimmune B12 issue which can cause gastritis Gerd and ulcers. Otherwise rethink your diet, and see if it lowers the acid think calming cooling non stimulant fooRAB. Acid issues can take years to heal esp with the stomach or esophogaus so be kind patient and give it time, but you have to feed it properly to do that, no medication can help if your diet is not proper. It is tough I mean i couldnt even have pepper salt u name it i ate my veggies and fruits and whole grains pretty plain with really no meat u could do a fish or boneless chicken id say again plain and bland. Its tough but worth it. I am young and so had to learn to cook homemade, no cans or any boxes the salt is irritating to acid problems. Put it like this what is barbq sauce and chips or even butter I wouldnt know been years since I had food like that. My days consist of veggies fruits grains and soy proteins all hand cooked. :)

2 years of atrophic gastirits with metaplasia- which means cell change and chance of cancer ... on the road to a stomach that looks like a baby again per the biopsy!

I am beginning to think that I too have IBS. I had my gb out 2 years ago. Still have bloating. I have lower back pain, hips hurt too, wonder about the osteoporosis angle from taking PPI's for 5-6 years.

My problem is now i don't know what to do,i stopped taking it & the pain came back under my left ribs,so i asked my doctor to lower it to 20 mg,and i'll see what happens.I have a cat scan this week, was waiting on the ins. company,so maybe i'll get some answers.
I can say even on the 20 mg,the dizziness is still present.

Please be careful taking any of the PPIs. They are all linked to osteoporosis and bone fractures, especially the hip.

Were you on a different PPI before that did not cause these side effects? If you need a PPI, is there any way your doctor can switch you to another? Have you tried an H3 blocker like Zantac instead of a PPI? Not as effective but it may do the trick for you in corabination with other remedies.

If you decide to stop taking the Nexium, you may wish to do it gradually by reducing the dose a little bit a time and supplementing with antiaciRAB until you get through the rebound.

You can find many posts here regarding what others have done to be able to get off and stay off PPI's.

What has worked for me is the following:

1) drinking two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar (organic) diluted in a glass of room temperature water twice a day.

2) Taking my calcium, magnesium and vitamin D3 supplements in liquid form. I take two tablespoons a day. One in the morning and one at night. You can buy the liquid corabo at a healthfood store. I buy a brand called Bluebonnet, but there are others on the market. The liqudd calcium and magnesium act as natural antiaciRAB.

3) I suck on DGL tablets the minute I start experiencing heartburn. I used to do this regularly but only do it now as needed.

4) I drink coconut water and almond milk. Both extremely soothing to the stomach.

5) I chew sugarless gum religiously after I eat. It really helps improve my digestion and get food down.

6) I take a probiotic and digestive enzymes after every meal.

7) No caffeine and very little alcohol. If I drink any alcohol at all, it will be a bit of white wine and always with meals.

I used to take many other remedies, but this seems to be a maintenance regimen that works for me.

Best wishes to you,

Rose

Georgiagem, I was on Nexium and felt like crawling in a hole somewhere and die! I never was so sick in all my life! I had all your symptoms. As soon as I stopped taking it, I was fine! Weak and a bit rundown for the experience but all the side effects left. I went back to taking Zegerid without problems.

I don't see posts from people who have ulcers and would really like for others with ulcers to share what they did to heal them. I hope mine are healed so I can get off the PPI next month. I will taper off as the pharmD advised using Prilosec.

Blessings to all, Annie
