Hi All.

I am writing to ask your opinion. I was diagnosed recently with Gastritis/GERD and my GI doctor at first recommended that I start a course of Prilosec OTC, which I did not tolerate well. It caused me sharp chest & back pain. I came off of it after two days. My doctor then wrote me a perscription for Nexium. I am gun shy to take it after my Prilosec experience. Are they similar? Right now my symptons are frequent belching, fullness after eating and wheezing and occassional nausea. The neausea can be controlled with Zantac or Zophran.

The wheezing is uncomfortable enough that I am willing to try Nexium.

Would love to hear others thoughts as I am new to "chronic" acid reflux. Earlier in my life, it was just once in a while.

Thanks!
JK

I've been on all of the PPI's out there. I had a horrible side effect with one, but had no side effects with the others. I also had varying degrees of success with each one I took. They do not all act the same and the success of each one is really dependent on the person.

If the PPI doesn't work alone, my GI doc recommended supplementing with Gaviscon, other docs also recommend Zantac as a supplement as well.

I agree with you about the Zofran. It has become my friend at times.

Thanks! I think I am going to try the Nexium and see how it goes. I have a follow-up with my doctor on February 5th and was told that if I don't tolerate the nexium, I'll need to have an endoscopy. Keep your fingers crossed for me!!!

Hi, Just thought I'd chime in and say Nexium is the only PPI that really helped me. I tried a couple of different PPIs before Nexium, but they didn't do much. Both my GI and my ENT said Nexium is the best PPI to deal with acid problems. I was taking 40mg daily for two years, and now am on a "maintenance" dosage of 20 mg daily. I'm doing pretty well compared to how I was in 2007 and 2008. There are others on this board who have had success with other meRAB. I think it's really an individual thing -- what works for some doesn't work for others. Give yourself two to four weeks to get used to a new med.
Good Luck.

My friend has gerd as well she did not torlorate that med either!! She said nexium works great for her no side effects!! I think they are all differnt!! My ent nurse said she could not take that med either horraible side effects she said nexium is the best works great and can still enjoy fooRAB!! So good luck give it a try!!

It really is an individual thing. My GI doc really advocates for the Nexium, but for me I had extremely bad side effects.

Just 2 weeks on Nexium and I'm still dealing with permenant side effects 1 1/2 years later.

No side effects with the others for me though. My favorites: 30 mg Prevacid Solutabs twice per day or Kapidex.

I'm on Nexium right now and really don't like it. I get the abdominal pain side effect and the nausea. I'd Love to change to something else but my Dr is making me wait till I have my Endoscope done. yuck

Nexium is a PPI (proton pump inhibitor) that is very effective for Reflux.
It works very well for me. I would not hesitate to try it.
