I have the same issue but most of my movies are avi so i just use DivX player and it works.

Settings > Preferences > Expand Video > Output > Advanced options > Select either DirectX/OpenGL/Windows GDI

I used it, it was crap. Jittery videos, poor resizing/scaling. Went to MPC and haven't looked back.
I've been using since the beginning of time when I had XP, but since I've started using Vista it feels kinda... crappy.
When I resize the window the video gets totally blurry and when I mouseover the video, and especially the volume-change-thingy, the video starts to play at like 2fps...
Any good alternatives? And by "MPC" you mean Media Player Classic emorphien?

yeah, MPC = Media Player Classic. It works flawlessly for me in Vista 64.
