Newbie needs help re Tungesten T & the internet

Hi,

I've had a Tungesten T for some years that I have used as a personal organiser that I sync with my PC. I run my own small business through eBay and recently I've been thinking about how I can monitor my eBay account when I'm away from home and out of reach of a computer e.g. at an internet cafe, etc.

Can someone tell me in simple terms if it is possible for me to access the internet using my PDA and if so what is involved? I'm in the UK.

All advice most welcome!

Well the simplest method would be to pair your Bluetooth Phone to the T and then becertain that you've got a data contract for your cellular provider. This would enable you to surf the net as well.

You could also connect a cable to the T and then your phone that would allow the same process to occur but why use wires when you can go "naked".

But - either way what you are asking to do is going to be really slowwwwwwww because of the limits of the device. The T is now 5 years old and it's processor speed and the slow speed of bluetooth (19,600 kbps) is just not a good way to go.

It may be time for an upgrade?

Thanks for your reply. You've confirmed what I suspected really - it is not worth pursuing with my current PDA. I have to work out whether the cost of upgrading is worth the outlay. My mobile is 'Pay As You Go' and it is not Bluetooth but it does the job just fine - it does have an internet conection but I can't access eBay on it. My PDA doe the job too really. I need to decide just how much I really need an internet connection on the move. I've been considering a 3g data card for my laptop too, so I've got plenty of food for thought!

Thanks!

Buddy,

You might do a search for Tungsten T modem? Palm used to provide a phone modem connection cradle for some of their older models. The T used a unique cradle/connection that is not found on the later units and with the advent of Bluetooth it wasn't deemed necessary to continue to offer the phone modem option.

I simply don't remember if it was an option for the T. If it was/is - then you could connect using a dial up connection via the T. If your ISP allows you to "roam" your connection as most due well then you could still try - but it would still be at the 19,600 slow connection speed. And the screen size - well I'd suggest dragging your laptop around rather than a small PDA. Just another thought?

Thanks Moose man for your reply.

All I really want to do is keep in touch with my eBay customers (potential and actual) when I'm away from home 4-5 days a month. This means being able to respond to questions about items I am selling and also reminding winning buyers I am away from home. eBay's 'holiday' settings are quite inadequate and the 'I'm away' message placed on listings is very easy for potential buyers to miss which could cause problems - lots of sellers get negative feedback simply because a buyer missed the notification message that the seller is away.

I'm really not clear in my head about how to go forward because it is quite hard to work out the true cost of each option!

Here in the UK, to use the laptop on the move, it looks like I would have to pay about ?100 (almost $200) for a 3g data card, plus about ?25 (almost 50$) a month to use it - I'm not clear if there are any other costs, or what kind of coverage I would get. This is definitely not worth the money for me as I really only need the mobile option for about 4-5 days a month. Also my laptop cost a lot of money and would be a greater risk of damage/loss if I carried it about with me (I'm really clumsy!).

I like the PDA option simply because I carry one anyway, but again I can't get a clear picture of what it would cost on an ongoing basis or which PDA is best for the job to upgrade to - and coverage is important as I will probably be in a mountainous area when I want to use it. I'm also not clear what eBay on a PDA will look like - I've been looking at a little programme called Abidia which is for using Ebay on a mobile phone or a PDA.

I'm a great fan of 'Pay as you go' rather than contracts as I don't think I get any real benefit by being linked into a contract. This is how I always used my mobile phone - I keep it topped up with credit and it is easy to work out how much it costs me.

Confused...

Buy a TX, snag a free signal and your ready to go. I travel internationally all the time. When I am in the UK, signals are floating all over the place. While I have never specifically logged into ebay on my TX, I wouldn't think there should be a problem. This device has replaced my laptop for all of my global travel needs.
