newbee questions regarding 88 Katana 600

Hi, Mike here, new to the group.
My son just picked-up an 88 Katana 600 and I am trying to help him make it road worthy.
I am not familiar to this bike but have been restoring/riding Yamaha XS1100's for several years.
The bike has not been well maintained and will need help in several areas.
We removed and cleaned the carbs. There was the usual grunge in the bowls but overall they were not too bad.
I DID have trouble with one of the Pilot screws though. It is siezed in the carb body, and at this time we can not adjust the mixture in that carb. I might have to drill it out so that I can use an extractor.
Today my son put the carbs back on and started it. After a quick trip around the block he returned to find oil (lots of it) leaking out of the air box.
I know that there is a crankcase vent tube that goes into the air box, but other than completely blown rings, I can not imagine how that much pressure would build-up in the case to produce that much oil in the breather tube.

Anything obvious that I am not thinking of?

Being new to this site, I have not seen everything that you have available yet.
Do you have access to a "tech tips" page that members post their experiences in??

Thanks in advance,
Mike
