new TXs w/crazy display

Hello, I'm new here; glad I finally found a Palm forum!

8 days ago I bought 2 TXs to replace our T3s. Both TX displays went crazy:

On Nr 1 the display went mad within 2 days. It was totally impossible to write something. Nr 2 just started within 3 days to behave the same way. It is already not possible to write even one single error-free word.

Palm told me, within 30 days of purchase the dealer can replace a defect Palm, including the whole package. My dealer agreed to this, I sent them back and waiting now for the replacements.

I feel still a bit uneasy: do Palm displays something like 'dry out' over time? Our 4 year old T3's displays still work beautifully, unfortunately their batteries are down.
 
They don't dry out. Palm is using an all plastic digitizer design whose indium tin oxide layer breaks up.

The digitizer (it's not actually the display that is bad but rather the 'digitizer' which lays on top of the display) is of low quality. Most people get well over three days use though.

The solution to that type of digitizer problem is to replace the plastic digitizer with a glass backed digitizer. Everyone that has done that has reported a lasting success as far as I know.
 
Replacing the digitizer requires removing the back off the TX and then basically completely disassembling the TX. However, this is not as big of a deal as it sounds. You can do it yourself if you are handy with fiddly stuff like this. Many people have no trouble, some can't do it to save their soul.

A new glass backed digitizer can be bought for $59 plus shipping from pdaparts.com. Another company called usedpdaparts.com says the expect to get glass backed digitizers for the TX soon. Maybe they have them by now.

You can also buy a plastic digitizer for the TX from either of these places, and it is somewhat cheaper, but for the effort involved and for the apparent much higher quality of the glass one, I would definitely recommend it.
