New to Palm world...

Hello, I am in the US Army (active) based out of FT Bragg, NC and within the next few months I will be deploying to Iraq so I decided to purchase a Tungsten T5. This is my first time using this device and I am unfamiliar with any software Palm devices use. In addition, I just finished reading the manual so I figure I am qualified enough to turn the device on and get lost? My question for you Palm experts is a simple on: What are some good programs that will help me succeed using this device.

I am a First Sergeant in charge of over 150 personnel? I am hoping this Palm will make my trail of paper woes a lot easier.

Thank you

Good evening, My son was over there for one year and four months. He used an M130, and may be a Tungsten T2, He liked DateBk 5 and Contacts 5. I believe both will work on the T5. Both programs can be found at www.palmgear.com or www.handango.com. Just type in the name of the program in the search. One thing I can tell you is to invest in a good zip up case. My son had problems with sand becase it is everywhere. It will get into everything. As far a cutting down on paperwork in the military, well good luck. Take care of yourself. I am sure others will have ideas on other programs. Russ.

Do not fret, this forum can be slow at times but it is the best one for helping get to the root of pda problems. I had an after thought for you. Because sand is such a problem over there, get a good screen protector also. I like clear touch by boxwave. They are at www.boxwave.com. Russ

Hi 1st SGT
Navy veteran here....
First, don't worry so much about the reads and only response. That is par for here...we multi-task here a lot and many of us read and then come back to reply later....
Second, please watch your back and come home safe!
Third, here is a freeware site that is jam packed with freebies. Not all freebies are worthless...there is a lot of freeware out there that is very useful. Check it out: http://www.freewarepalm.com/

I have a T5 which is my 3rd Palm device and my 5th running the Palm OS, so I guess I qualify as reasonably experienced in this field. I've attached a document with some recommendations.

I'm happy to answer further questions too 1SG. I have a vast collection of Palm software which I've accumulated over the years (rather too much actually!)

Good luck in Iraq. I wish you good fortune and a safe return.

The one thing I forgot to mention in my note above is that I cannot emphasize strongly enough the importance of what Guitar Picker said about getting some screen protectors. Yes, they're darn fiddly and a pain in the neck to apply. But if you scratch a screen protector (which is very easily done) then you just peel it off, throw it away and apply another one. If you scratch your T5 screen you either have to live with it or a very expensive repair job.

In a desert environment I'm betting that a good case of some kind wouldn't be a bad idea either.
