new superbike

Probably move the weight of the top cylinder a little more forward.

After having a 1098 and an 1198, I'd be happy if a new superbike comes out soon. Not to mention, it's not just about current owners (who'd rather not spend more money on a new bike). It's about offering something new or improved so people buy Ducatis' and the company can stay in business and keep making these bikes and racing them.

A more compact engine (think Aprilia's 60* V layout) means a shorter wheelbase, hence quicker steering geometry, longer swingarm (favourable to reduce dimensional change of the wheelbase on compression strokes of the rear), ability to move the engine further forward to place more weight on the front tyre.......

However this not Ducati's plan: The patent designs show they will likely keep the 90* angle between the cylinders (this has advantages, namely perfect primary harmonic balance), though they will rotate this "L" configuration rearwards and upwards, effectively reducing both the height and length of the engine unit.......Why they haven't done this ages ago must surely come down to economic/production issues!!

I respect your opinion but the 999 series is not where I will put my money. I am sure that it is a good bike but It is not for me. I know there are people who adores this pierre's styling but unfortunately I am not one of them.

They're not reducing the cylinder angle as far as we know. I'm pretty sure it will remain a 90 degree. They are rotating both of them backwards so the front cyl is more vertical.

916/996/998 = hot
999 = nigh bankruptcy
1x98 = beautiful if not a little 'jappy'

I can't wait to see what comes next. I do hope they don't make any big mistakes (technically as well as market positioning) in the engine department though.

I was in that same situation when I bought my 1098S in Sept of 08 , and in Jan of 08 I hear about a 1198s for the same price. I decided to keep and enjoy my 1098s , because the value had dropped so much it was not worth selling.

Any idea on what RPM limits/power outputs could be on a short stroke 1198 motor? I mean, surely the goal has to be higher revs to compete with the i4's right? Not to mention the new Kawi motor that supposedly rotates 540 degrees between firings...

As it stands power - on modern sport bikes - outstrips the traction offered by current tyre technology. Unless something miraculous happens at Pirelli et al, then progress will be directed towards getting all that power to the ground safely and more efficiently.

That means most of the effort will be in handling (electronic suspension etc) weight reduction and improved traction (or more specifically traction control systems, along with ABS)

My money will be on the next generation of super bikes following the Multistrada (or even BMW SS1000R) in having much more in the way of rider aids and advanced electronics...
