New Super Mario Bros. Cartoons

They had three cartoon shows based on the Super Mario Bros. games- The SMB Super Show, Adventures of SMB 3 and Super Mario World.

NIntendo still makes SMB-related adventure games-how come they don't make new cartoons based on them?

Because they wouldn't be as much fun...and are embarrased by the old ones? :)

How much more self advertising can you get when you add Gameboy as a character to one of the shows ;)...?

Yeah, that's pretty much why Nintendo didn't want to be interviewed by Shout Factory for the boxsets...

As for why they haven't made a new series, I think it has to do with the fact that, unlike Kirby and F-Zero, Mario is one of their biggest (and THE biggest) franchises they have. It would become a worry of whether or not a new cartoon would do the series justice. Plus, I don't think you honestly want to hear Charles Martinet's voice for longer than a few short sound clips...

Besides, I'd rather see Nintendo take a crack at a Star Fox or Metroid cartoon first.

Because the old ones sucked. Just look at the YouTube poops, they're made with that show and now I can't stop says Mama Luigi.

And they also would only do a good cartoon if they could do it right.

Especially since back in the early games they had all those anime pictures in the instruction booklets. I felt it was just one big tease for something that would never happen. The closest thing we got was the Zelda manga in Nintendo Power in '92 and the Metroid manga in '94.

You know, I'm willing to agree the Mario cartoons didn't age well (especially compared to Sonic). But they were VERY appropriate for the time frame they came out in. I have fond memories of watching the show religiously with my cousins after school and Mario 3 was my Saturday morning crack. The only thing that bugged me was the apparent DROP in quality for the third season of Mario and Captain N (Captain N and New Super Mario World) The animation was putrid, and the writing was extremely pre-schoolish. It didn't help matters when the opening to Mario World was extremely well done and very anime-ish and then the actual show just flat out decieved us!

If they have it more serious, it can work. And if they use the original names. DiC only used the name Bowser twice in SMB3. The rest of the time, he was referred to as King Koopa.

The Mario cartoons were perfectly fine if you ask me, with the exceptions being the ones that parody fairy tales and stories, like where Bowser dresses up as Captain Blackbeard, Attila the Hun, and etcetera, which are really cheesy. The ones that don't focus on those parodies are fine. They were goofy, funny, and lighthearted, which is what Mario is. Suddenly making some dark edgy Mario cartoon will end up causing it become like Sonic the Hedgehog has in recent years.

Would a Mario cartoon work these days? I'd say no. Very few video game cartoons do these days (most being made in Japan these days, and only one or two actually being worth watching) It worked in the past since on 8bits systems, there was no dialog, no real story, just get to the end of the level and beat the boss. Samething with the Zelda cartoon (though surfer Link is cheesy, Link had no personality in the games back then. Heck, he still doesn't have one since he never talks, which is why I think a Metroid cartoon wouldn't be good.)

Granted, Mario and Zelda still don't have as deep or intricate stories like an RPG or anything, but I think companies have realized cartoons based on video games don't work out in the long run, especially if it's a well-known IP. People enjoy the games so much because of the gameplay, not the story. This is especially true with games with extremely simple/no stories, like Mario.

From what I've seen of the later Zelda games, they've gotten more story oriented to a degree. I'd say the games with a more serious tone (Zelda, Castlevania, Metroid, Dragon Quest) lend themselves to a story arc style tales.

But yeah, The Mario cartoons can work as nice simple comedies. No one expects Looney Tunes or Mickey Mouse to be filled with subplots, so why Mario should be an exception is puzzling to me.

Is that why some people think Luigi's gay?

The Pac-Man games inspired a bunch of cartoons, and Saturday Supercade
was based on other popular '80s games.

Maybe game-basd cartoons were a fad?

Well, that, and there's also the way Mario says "Nice of the princess to invite us over for a picnic, eh Luigi?" in the Hotel Mario opening.

I don't get it-people think Mario's gay?

It might have fun to see new SMB-related cartoons that featured new villains, and other characters like Wario, Waluigi, Daisy, etc.

It's because Luigi was portrayed as somewhat effeminate during most of the Nintendo 64 and Gamecube era for whatever reason.

I think they should just do a Captain N-ish Super Smash Brothers cartoon.

I think a new cartoon could work quite well, especially if it's Japanese-produce like the Kirby show. There's a wealth of characters besides the bros. themselves to work with, and like was said, the Paper Mario and M&L series shows there's plenty of room for humor in the series. Yes, done properly, it could work.

What about making Wario and Waluigi appear in it? It'd be interesting to see the rivalries between them and the Marios, like the ones they have in the spin-off games.
