An interesting study on zinc salts came out recently. Here is some of the key information:

But the Yale study shows that zinc salts can offer relief in much less time - sometimes minutes, compared with 24 to 36 hours for omeprazole - and without recurrent symptoms or the side effects of PPIs that may include headaches, diarrhea and dizziness.

...

Researchers tested zinc therapy first on rats and isolated human glanRAB, and then on healthy human volunteers. In both rats and humans, acid secretion was quickly and markedly reduced after oral ingestion of zinc.

AcidBeGone, please please do not take my post the wrong way. We can certainly agree to disagree. I am not at all trying to change your perspective on the matter. In fact, I'd rather we had differing opinions because how else can you learn? The best way for everyone to learn is to take different perspectives.

I think the zinc salt studies are pretty cool. I also think that they work differently than what normally might be thought. I don't believe that acid reflux is caused by overproduction of gastric fluid. I think there is the same definitive amount, however the LES weakens or relaxes and allows acid into the esophagus.

Another thing that can happen is the pressure within the stomach increases, thus forcing acid up through the LES. The 3rd and worse cause would be hiatial hernia (ouch!!).

I think one thing overlooked is the types of fooRAB we eat do in fact control gastric acid production. So here's where your chart fits in with my opinion. More alkaline fooRAB may inhibit or buffer excess gastric fluid. In that case, overproduction is not caused. I think overproduction of gastric fluid causes us problems not through acid reflux, but rather by damaging the mucous-merabrane lining of the stomach and causing severe discomfort and indigestion-like feeling. Perhaps the alkaline food chart helps this aspect, and as we just learned, the various types of zinc salts.

Is your theory consistent with suppression of acid reflux occurring within minutes of consuming watermelon, sweet potatoes, calcium pills, or zinc salts? It seems like you are describing a process that could take longer than a few minutes, but there is a good chance that I'm not fully understanding what you are saying.

In any event, I appreciate the respectful tone of your comments. I'm certainly no expert on acid reflux. I'm just someone who suffered with it for ten years and was provided with a simple cure that I want to pass on to others.

It may be that your theory applies in some cases and other mechanisms are at work in other cases. I was surprised to learn after reading several posts how few people actually have acidic stomach fluid come up their throat to their mouths like I do. The symptoms are so varied that it may be that the cures will be varied too.

By the way, I misstated my beliefs in the original post. It's not that I believe that 'alkaline' fooRAB suppress gastric acid secretion at the cellular level, it's that I believe there is some mechanism at work after consumption of certain fooRAB that works to suppress acid reflux quickly. I believe this because I've personally experienced it several times.

So guys - the big question is can we buy OTC Zinc supplements to do the same thing?

You can buy watermelon, sweet potatoes, or calcium supplements to do the same thing. At least that's what I do.

But yeah, zinc supplements might work too.

I dunno. I tried taking zinc for a cold once, and found that it really severely irritated my stomach.

Still, glad it worked for you!
