Article in Variety saying there is a new Star Trek film based on James T. Kirk and Mr. Spock, including their first meeting at Starfleet Academy and first outer space mission! And... helmed by Lost/Alias/MI:3 director/producer J.J. Abrams!

Just noticed there is a post in the Cult forum on this, but it is a movie, so i think i'm justifed posting here. ;)

So, who can pull off playing a young James T. Kirk and Mr. Spock? Suggestions?

I think this is great news for Star Trek and for the fans, going back to the Kirk and Spock era is a fantastic idea as this was the era which the majority of Trekkie fans relate to and prefer the most, including myself.
There was talk of a TV series based on Kirk's early days at Starfleet Academy, but this was dropped and replaced with 'Enterprise' which series has since ended. Perhaps Trek producer Rick Berman is thinking about this idea again and this new movie could possibly be the opener for a possible new TV series.
As a clever twist, it would be a good idea to maybe get William Shatner to return to play Kirk's father or uncle, that would be a good idea.

this will be a disaster

  • Director is new to trek
  • is an odd numbered trek movie (never a good sign)
  • all new cast
  • and worst its a bloody prequel

What is the fascination with prequels, they are all guff, and for trek enterprise proved that, the only way the franchise will survive is to to make a nother huge jump forward, say four or five hundred years.

I dunno, i'd give J.J. Abrams the benifit of the doubt. I mean, it neeRAB a decent sized name directing to have a chance to stand up to Berman and Braga who have destroyed the franchise in recent times. Enterprise wasn't a bad show once they saw sense and handed it to Manny Coto. It was just too little to late to save the series. I think the appointment of Abrams might show they have learnt their lesson, and to stop interfering. ;)

I would agree though, a prequel is a more dangerous route than moving the show on X number of years though, as your always having to consider the 'history' of Trek, where you'd have more free reign in a future setting. Plus the bits they did show of the furture in Enterprise i though looked friking sweet. :D

In my heart I'd like it to succeed but can't help feeling it'll bomb.
Re `odd No's`. No 10 was a crock too so the next can't be any worse!!!
IMO the only way forward is to stop with the blasted prequels and shift forward a few hundred years.

Can't say i'm really into the prequel thing either (look what happened to Star Wars!) and i think the Kirk/Spock thing has had its day and any further stories would most probably just mess up the timeline.

Personally, i think a new film with a new crew on a starship in the alpha quadrant set in the next gen/RAB9/voyager timeline would be the way to go as that was always what worked best. They could use the film as some kind of major expensive pilot episode (with some kind of ending) that if it worked, and took mega box office, the actors would have it written in their contracts that they have to do at least one season of tv, also with a new class of starship with fancy new weapons and perhaps turmoil in the universe and starfleet on the brink of collapse due to conspiracys and that kind of thing (bit like firefly i guess!).

If the writers went down that route then you could always have guest appearances from the 3 series i mentioned which would always keep fans happy. I think if they had some kind of back story (revealed later in the series) about how the Borg were defeated and have been stuck in the Delta quadrant somehow with no warp capability so there would be room for a new alien race hell-bent on not assimilating but just totally destroying all remaining life in the universe and you could have every major race unwillingly but having to join forces to defeat them, it could be epic.

Oh, and maybe bring in a new Q!

That last bit was a little bit tongue in cheek! :p

I hear what you're saying about JDL but i don't like the fact that he looked older in Voyager (not his fault i know, thats the trouble with not having a fountain of youth in real life!), a bit like Data getting older over the years, it didn't look right, if Q was omnipotent surely he wouldn't age?!?

Yeah, i suppose they could have JDL in it and he could somehow explain why he does age like he prefers ageing like the measly humans or wanting to be more like his old adversary Picard! ;)
