New Star Trek film underway

It was this month revealed that plans are underway and in the "very early stages of development" for a new Star Trek film.

After Star Trek's tenth movie "Nemesis" was a flop at the box office, I eagerly anticipate a better film but I am cautious because I don't want it to come too soon - they need a break to revitalise the Star Trek franchise.

However, I still argue that although the film wasn't the best ever out of the ten films they have made, it was not the script or the acting that made this a flop - it was simply because it was released at the same time as the Lord of the Rings, and Paramount didn't even release it in some countries, which shows that it could have had greater potential.

I sincerely welcome a new film - and the interesting news is that it is to be a "prequel". Rick Berman isn't letting on to anything else but he definitely confirmed this to the Star Trek magazine in the most recent issue.

could be interesting.i'd like a film set at the time of 'the undiscovered country' ,maybe set on the Excelsior, with george takei and tim russ.

Yes definitely. Star Wars is a load of rubbish and doesn't belong in Star Trek. I don't really think that there has been any Star Wars in the films though? Most of them have been pretty unique to Star Trek in my opinion. Although others may beg to differ as usual! :)

Definitely, what a good idea! I loved Undiscovered Country and I would like to have seen more about how the peace developed. These scriptwriters can do anything with anyone, so I'm sure they could get in a few of the Star Trek legenRAB.

Although the films under the command of Picard have been good, they could never beat the originality of the old ones with Kirk, especially Undiscovered Country and the Voyage Home. First Contact was undoubtedly the best from Picard.

how about..... a race from the data quadrant comes in search of janeway after she angered them (killed some of the race) they come towarRAB federation space and are intercepted by the U.S.S Voyager - A which is immeadiatly mistaken for janeways old ship and attacked by the 100 strong flotilla of ships heading for earth, the ship is the boarded by the race and they take it. Admiral janeway hears the news and immeadiatly sets a 65 strong force of the best ships starfleet have to attack the intruders, she boarRAB the U.S.S Constellation ( a large defensive type ship) and heaRAB towarRAB the battle ground...... a battle ensues and janeway is kidnapped by the race and sentences to death only Capt (insert name of new capt) can save her..........

the ship constellation and the new capt could then be a new star trek series!

May be they should try and set a new film in a familular period in the star trek time line, but have a new cast with the right story im sure it will work.

Maybe something of a tie in with Enterprises temporal cold war but looking at it from the TNG era instead, starfleet have detected changes in the time line and have managed to track future guy to the TNG era and find out that its a romulan trying to destroy the federation before its even created by feeding information to the Enterprise era romulans who are at war with earth.

Back in the TNG era they (I'm thinking Riker, Trois and his new command/ship) track down future guy and arrest him but before they get him they see the sulaban recieve information to destroy Enterprise before it meets with the Vulcans and Andorians who are considering helping earths war with the romulans.

I'd like to see Riker on Enterprise saying how he had only seen this ship in the academy then laughing realising he had said the same thing to Cochran during the first warp flight which he relays to Archer.

:)

Absolutely agree with this. They barely gave it much time at the cinema at all. Gangs of New York I think was the other blockbuster at the time. Between that and LOTR, it didn't stand a chance.

That said it wasn't a great Trek film, but it's still leagues above Star Trek V.

So, any more news on this new film? Personally I can't see them having any success with the spin oRAB, even though I'd love to see a RAB9 film, the audience for it would be far too small. Voyager has run it's course and god forbid anyone consider a movie of the awful Enterprise.

They've always been talking about a Star Fleet Academy film, but I think that would fail too. Any film without recognisable Trek cast stanRAB little chance.

What they need is a replacement series for TNG bringing Trek back on board the Enterprise and then maybe films to follow.

when they do make a new film i would love to see the voyager crew in the new film or enterprise crew. i mean i want to see what happend to the voyager crew afder they got home. and if they could have Seven in the new film that would be grate. and Janeway.

Seeing the Voyager crew in action one more time would be fantastic, but I'm not sure whether it would have the same clout as the others. If they had the Enterprise crew in the film, it would be another disaster at the box office.

I mean, Enterprise is less than interesting at the moment. I gave it lots of chances to prove me wrong and whilst everyone put it down I remainded positive about it, but I'm soon changing my views on that. An Enterprise film would be a disaster.

Voyager was the best series in my opinion, I just hope it would work well in a film. I think if Voyager had another assault with the Borg then it could work out well as they are simply the 'ultimate' enemy, especially considering Janeway is like the other Queen of space....

They should just do another Kirk one, using the same technology they have recently used to reconstruct events from the past using the actual faces of the people that were there on an actors body. It's some sort of fancy new CGI, which was done for the history channel. You couldn't tell it was fake.

Have to agree on the comment about voyager being the best ever made.

My choices would be star trek II : The Wrath Of Khan being the best from the original crew. Worst: the one with spocks half brother(cant remember what its called)

Best from TNG First Contact. Worst insurrection.

Michael Dorn (Worf) is a great part of the crew. But a film would be incomplete without Guinan. Ummm, I just don't see the newer series' having the same potential as the older ones. But with Picard saying 'no' to another film, and many of the old crew getting too old (for example Bones is dead and Scotty is 84 with Alzheimers), the Star Trek movie franchise is in a bit of a 'situation'.

Before setting down, Picard says he has been 'itching' to try out the 'Argo' (the dune buggy)

So there's why - he wanted a bit of fun while picking up the bits of robot, which were spread out over 'several kilometres'

As for the life forms - When analysing the planet La Forge tells him of 'isolated pockets' of a 'pre-warp' civilisation.

I'm by no means a 'Trekkie' but do enjoy all incarnations of Star-Trek.
However, I haven't enjoyed many of the movies.

I did enjoy 'Undiscovered Country', 'Generations', and 'First Contact' - but was dissappointed with 'Insurrection'

IMO 'Nemesis' was an improvement on 'Insurrection', but wasn't much better than the poorer early movies

Er no - it was crap - simple

Dune buggies - why when they have transporters ?

Surely the life forms on the surface would have been apparent with the scanners before they started picking up the bits of the alternative Data ?

Who would pay for a cinema release thats just over twice as long as an episode, when the story could have been condensed into an episode ?

No it sucked, big time

The film wasn't as good as the others. I'll give you that. It wasn't all rubbish, but I do agree that the dune buggy business was stupid and very unrealistic for Star Trek. That was probably the worst bit.

I think some of the other problems were:
  • The fight with the Scimitar was prolonged too long and had no 'punch' to it like the short but really effective fight in "Undiscovered Country"
  • Too much waffle at the beginning, unlike previous films
