New Spooks tonight....

Interesting article, thanks Servalan.

Budget cuts or no, loved the first episode. The brilliant opening with Harry and the HS was Spooks at its finest - well-written and and supremely well-rehearsed and acted. For all the talk about budget cuts (which I mainly sympathise with) that simply produced scene also demonstrated that captivating TV does not necessarily require a huge budget.

Ok, I will accept that Spooks has a long and fine tradition of killing major characters off (I still get queasy every time I see a deep fat fryer!) but I just can't see it in this case. I'm prepared to be proved wrong.

Yep, a certain amount of tech really does seem to be powered by witchcraft, but I am willing to suspend belief purely because I have read Spycatcher about a spyhunter in Mi5 during the cold war, and the stuff they had in their arsenal was years ahead of anything commercially available at that time.

Its back baby! :)

I like our two new operatives, and the way they knocked off the ex Home Secretary. Very civilised I thought. We always knew that Lucas had a mysterious past just not Don Draper style!

Harry said it was 30,000 tonnes - which as it clearly wasn't make you wonder how good the intelligence service is :D. They also talked about the launch of a new HMS Endurance - which is still in service with the RN. Perhaps Spooksworld is set in a post Thatcher world where the 1982 defence cuts were actually made and HMS Endurance was junked. They also has had a news clip referring to it as a type 54 destroyer when it was supposed to be an aircraft carrier and said it was the launch - but Plymouth doesn't have the capability.

Like I say must be an Alt-Earth, no doubt with a Rose Tyler

Has anyone got an explanation as to where the pirates disappeared to? Didn't they get on the submersibles? Where did they go after that?! It's too much of a gaping hole in the plot for my liking but other than that I loved it. I wish Harry and Ruth would get back together but maybe they prefer the underlying tension between them than getting them together - I'm remembering Frasier was never the same once Niles and Daphne got together ;-)

Look no further than Laura Mackie for the reasons for this continuing downwarRAB spiral.

And about the only thing that will perhaps save ITV drama is when someone with the right clout has the good sense to finally show her the door.

She's failed abysmally since taking over from Nick Elliot. No other way of putting it.

I agree but do have issues with the way Spooks' budget has been cut over the years.

Tonight's episode was good and indeed had some great moments (loved the Harry/Ruth sub-plot) but the CGI missiles could have done with a little more spending on them and I sincerely hope Dimitri is a full regular as Thames House has become staffed by fewer and fewer people in recent series.

Spooks is one of the drama jewels in the BBC's crown and it's a shame it's starved of money when less popular and less intelligent series like Waterloo Road can afford big bucks actors like Amanda Burton and Robson Green, and we have to endure the likes of The Deep.

I'd love for Spooks continue - but the least the BBC can do is fund it properly ...
