Well I finally got started on my Neurontin and have been taking it full strength for 2 days now ( 300 mgs. 3 times a day) but I have started having some new pains along with my body swelling. I am having hip pains (in joints) and burning pains along my thighs so bad that I can't even touch them.

I am starting to get an incision infection just llike I did with the abdominal surgery. It started up on Friday after home health was here for physical therapy. I have been on antibiotics since my first fusion surgery on Jan.29th. I have a fever of 100.6 today

How many of you have had problems with Neurontin? I can't take Lyrica because it causes my whole body to jerk. What other medicine does everyone take for nerve pain?

Linda

Hey AP22 I sure hate you have that WC situation going on. I read horror stories here and then know people here in our little town that have problems with WC and I think it is enough to deal with the medical problem then you have to fight WC.

Do you have a lot of nerve pain too? When the home health nurse came out last week (and they have been so good to me) she tried to explain the nervous system to me and she said it is so complicated. She said since we have so many nerves in our body and they all start at different places in our body and then add in the fact that they all end at different places in our body then we can have pain most of the time all over our body. I get so mad when I get these pains that I start talking to them and I am sure if someone where to walk in on me that they would put me away. Ha!Ha!.

Well I hope you have a better day today. You know I actually put this surgery off for 5 years because I knew it would be pretty tough and at that time they had said I was bone on bone and it seems like they sort of down played that so I figured it wouldn't hurt putting it off. Now since they found I had the 4 spurs I am thinking I may have done some major harm while waiting since I could have permanent nerve damage since I did that with my neck. I know it is scary and I wouldn't want to do the surgery because someone else told me to but I will tell you that they really don't know how bad or good things are until they get in there and see for theirselves.

Have a good day. I hope we have sunshine and warmth today.

Lots of Hugs

hi Linda,
I just started neurontin yesterday after my radio frequency.I have muscle spasms in calf, but nothing you going through, don't know how you are doing it.I be heading for the bottle. Is pains tolerable or really bad?Hope no more surgery for you.you have a bone graft too?I guess most likely.

Good mornng Linda,
You so right.my situation so confusing,I saw 2 different neuro guys, one was mine who did surgery back in 1995.he said I didn't need a fusion just some bone removed from the nerves.I would think removing bones would weaken spine more, anyway the second surgeon WC sent me to has 5 years experience and he mostly does the brain, his partner does spines.he said needed fusion.my other doc says no need for instrumentation cause its a problem later on.I do have alot of foot pain,if i walk wrong way it hurts more burning than pain.I been like this since 2005 when I fell, but the feet seem to be getting worse.I'm going to try and ask the PM doc to do more tests,MRI,bone scan or something to see if I'm any worse.I'm only concern about my upper discs taken the pressure after a fusion, they are not too hot, some are tiny herniated, couple buldging.my facets are rubbing together, but no serious pain there.yet want to hear something crazy, last summer not a pain,I felt so good thought was cured.minute Nov arrived right back into the fart sack again with my back.WC left me with no meRAB last year,I had to withdraw from cyrabalta immediately since WC wouldn't renew the meRAB,I thought was having a heart attack.I'm going to tell the WC judge once I see him again and tell him how they treated me.Ridiculous can't have any meRAB or something.they think you are faking.Guess have to do surgery just to prove to WC not pretending.thank God I got SS,the judge saw how I was getting around and awarded me my SSD.then WC dropped their payments on me.fun life. Are you walking basically able to use bathroom okay?I heard need to learn how to walk again.

Hey Linda,
I think Pepper had a problem with swelling on some of the nerve meRAB. Hopefully some more people will post after the week-end. I can't believe you have another incisional infection! I think you should call your doc tomorrow, he may need to change your antibiotic. You may have a bacteria this time that is not sensitive to the antibiotic you are currently taking. Feel better girl.

Hi Linda,
I wouldn't waste any time getting that new infection looked at. If the home health nurse is coming anyway, let her call your doctor. She might get an even faster response. The sooner you get a new antibiotic, the faster it will be controlled. You don't want to give it any extra time to get a good foothold on you. :(

I had painful swelling in my feet and ankles for 5 months post op. My doctor was confident it wasn't due to blood clots, but he couldn't figure it out. He gave me the option of seeing some sort of specialist for it, I can't remeraber which kind, but as I weaned out of my brace, it seemed like that was the cause. Strange. It's not like it was that tight. I laid with my feet elevated all the time to keep the swelling from getting too bad. It could have been a lot worse. At least I didn't have to deal with a lot of nerve pain. I did have some nerve issues, but nothing that gave me lasting pain.

I hope you get some relief from the nerve pain. Please let us know how you're doing with that infection.

((((((hugs))))))

Well the home health nurse said the swelling of my feet is caused by my Neurontin! Has anyone else had that problem with Neurontin? They are both swollen so bad today. Seems durab to me to take the medicine if it is going to do that to me. I told the nurse that my whole body feels bloated and I am not eating that much. (I know everybody says that but I am being honest.) I tried to get one of the PA's to put me on Topomax for the nerve pain and she said that medicine wasn't for it. I never even thought about the swelling being caused my the medication.

My infection was better by the time she got hear today (isn't that usual) so she gave me some bandages just in case it happens again. I think she thought I was nuts because nothing was wrong now. Well, she wouldn't be the first to think I am nuts and won't be the last, Ha!HA!. I am glad the incision was better because I was getting worried again.

The Home Health PT will be out tomorrow to help do some execises. I just hope the swelling is down so can do them.

Well I think I need some sleep. Talk later.

Hugs

hi Linda good morning to you, hope you slept a bit.I'm on Neurontin since last friday only 300mg at night,my feet are okay as far as no swelling.then I'm not on higher doses like others yet.my feet feel somewhat better,so guess must be lots of nerve damage now.Are you able to sleep at all?or up and down crap?My appetite always good, but so far it slowed down hopefully get some pounRAB off.

Hey thanks everyone I am going to call Home Health first since they are here in my county and see what they say. I have had such weird nerve pain today. My left leg and foot became so swollen I worried about a blood clot so I went to bed and kept my leg up and when I woke up 2 hrs later the swelling was down. I think home health will be glad to come out because they had said something about dressing changes if needed and at that time there wasn't a need. I just feel so yucky and I am taking showers but the incision leaks so bad. The pain in my right thigh when I lay down is like laying on a bed of hot coals. I got up as quick as I can move and pulled my gown and robe up to see if maybe I had been bitten by something but nothing there but if I touched my skin it felt like it was on fire. I have really started to have pain in both my sides now. Deb you are probably right about the antibiotic because I have now been on antibiotic since 1/29/08.

This neurontin is really making me gain weight which then that depresses me but I don't know what to do. Why can't I ever be lucky enough to get the pills that cause weight loss. AP22 the pain is horrible and I just cry and get over it. I don't get what anyone thinks any more about me crying because they are not in my shoes. Hope everyone gets a goood night's sleep and we will talk again in the morning. This board has been a life saver for me.

Hugs and best wishes

Hi Linda hope you feeling a bit better.like I said you are one brave girl to even go through such a surgery,I chickened out twice since 2005.The RF helps the back pain but pushes the nerve pain into my legs and feet.I'm on WC and my options are running thin.WC wants me to have surgery,I want to stay with PM but they don't want to help.some mess I'm in.
