Thanks,, i will have to wait for my specialist to perscribe it to me then,, we are having a great deal of financial troubles with both my parents laid off and me not old enough yet and still in school.

So i am 15 and i am lost. I started getting short of breath during my basketball season last year. I was really in shape yet felt so run down and couldnt breathe and could tell it was getting worse. Finished the season, not that great but alive. They couldnt find an inhaylor to work for me. I found out im allergic to albuterol.

This summer i was really sick, we had non stop fires for 2 months and i was really sick the whole time, throwing up, couldnt breathe, weak, no sleep, BAD COUGH. Ever since i have had a chronic cough, bad chest pains non stop, stamach tightness, short of breath, and recently i have started getting really bad heartburn and realized what i have been tasting is acid. Does this sound like GERD? My baby nephew was diagonised with it and reflex and stamach problems runs in my family heavily. All newborns in our family get tested but i never was.

I just got tested for asthma finally after a year, and the test showed i didnt have asthma. The tech said he wasnt a doctor but thinks i might have a hiatal hernia or something in my chest? idk where, that is making my breathing bad.

I go see the specialist next wed but i want to know what you guys have to say about it before i go. I am scared and desperate. I got asked not to play basketball which was a huge deal because i was playing jv this year and is a huge part of my life. I am also dismissed out of PE due to me almost throwing up everyday from coughing so bad.

please any comments are welcomed!

Your symptoms could be from GERD. GERD often mimics asthma symptoms but doesn't usually respond to asthma medications. The acid from your stomach may be irritating the lining of your esophagus and the top branches of your airways causing them to get swollen and irritated. Your body produces extra mucus to try to protect the irritated areas and that corabination of mucus and inflammation is very hard to distinguish from the symptoms of asthma.

The good news for you is that getting the GERD under control should help your symptoms improve dramatically, and there are lots of medications available to help do that. Hang in there until you see the doctor but if it's GERD you should be back playing basketball in no time.

Before you see the specialist, buy your self some Prilosec OTC, take one every morning.

Also, buy soem Tums, and suck a couple like candies whenever you feel discomfort.

If the above helps, it is very likely o be GORD, and would help the doc work out which treatments work for you.

Always have a few Tums (or the store brand, dirt cheap and just as good) in your bag/backpack/pocket, sucki a couple whenever you feel the acid rising up.

Hi Chantel, How did they find you hiatal hernia?
They suspect i have one,, my breathing test for asthma showed signs of having that or a growth in my chest somewhere? How are they treating it? I too have ALOT of chest/rib pain. At first i thought i somehow might have bruised a rib or something but after a month or two of constant pain i realized that wasnt the issue. I have it mostly on my left side but at times it is in the middle and the right side as well. Im curious to know why the pain moves around?...

Hi Em,

They found my hiatal hernia during an upper endoscopy procedure.

My pain is more to the right and sometimes a burning pain in the chest (reflux) as I can sense an acid taste in my mouth at times.

Thanks for your comments,, I am currently am taking a store brand of Zantac 200mg. I am taking it once a day. I have tried sucking on tums before i eat lunch. 3rd period when my stomach is ready for lunch (lunch is after 3rd) i suck on tums and it doesnt help. I have noticed, as others also have, that i seem much better on the zantac. I still get really bad heartburn and chest pain, but my cough is better and my asthma is almost gone. I haven't tried to excerise yet just because i feel so sick all the time. anyone else just plain doesnt feel good or could that be because of something else???

Hi, I want to give you a holistic tip. Try apples. Don't laugh. I have had severe heartburn for years, and the ONLY THING THAT HELPS ME, IS APPLES. AND THE ONLY KIND IS "pINK LADY". I refuse to do anything above RolaiRAB, which works better than Tums, and as a preventative, I eat a 1/2 apple before I ingest whatever would bother me. Different fooRAB, ie, different people. Apples are a God send, use them before or after a meal. I have even taken them in my purse in a restaurant and cut it up at the table. It WORKS!! REMErabER THE OLD ADAGE. apple a day, keeps dr. away, well,
this is a piece of an apple a meal... try it. good luck

ps my nephew was on medication for heartburn, and I rec. apples, and he said,
"aunt Diana, you healed me!!". I don't take that med any longer, just apples.

Thanks, I have my doctors appointment tomorrow,,and will talk to the doctor about getting an endoscopy if he doesnt ask for one right away. I feel the burning or like weird feeling in the chest as well.

An old friend told me that the endoscopy she had for i think reflex wasnt hard at all, she said they put her completely to sleep and then she woke up feeling the same in recovery. How did yours go? Do they sedate you through an iv? i hate needles most of all.

don't laugh. try apples. I swear they work. buy "pink lady", eat one before you have lunch, or eat 1/2 and save the other for after the meal. It WORKS!! ALSO, keep a food diary. You could be allergic to wheat, or something else. The stomach pain def could be from food allergies. Keep a diary for a week, and watch the corresponding symptoms that you have. blessings. diana

I have been eating apples everyday since my recent flareup a week ago. I pray they are working. They can't hurt. But I am still trying to tame the wild tiger. (my esoph and upper tummy) It seems to be mad at me from all my bad eating recently and over the years. This is a severe wake up call for me. I am truly changing my diet and life from this point on. This is only day 5 on the lifestyle change. I am going through ALOT. Like the shakes (probably from no caffeine which I used to have 3 to 5 glasses a day) and no sugars...unless it's pure and on my cream of wheat. My body is angry with the change. I must force the change because I WILL conquer this reflux!

The other thing I have heard over and over is to take a couple of tsp.of apple cidar vinegar in a glass of water before each meal. Something about it giving you the right chemistry in your stomach to digest food. It's not that bad. Of course it's not that great eithor but it beats the reflux if I had to choose.

I am stuffering from what I think is BAD side effects from Prilosec. Stabbing pains in intestines, gas, yellow diarrhea and urine, and a headache. I didn't have that at all until 5 days on the meRAB. Ugh! I have read tons of testamonies about bad side effects from Prilosec. I must say however it does work. I have been off it for almost 2 days now. Feeling only a tiny bit better.
I have opted to try Zantac. SO I will start that tonight or tomorrow.
Any thoughts on that med?? Anyone?? Thanks! Please let me know.
Hang in there everyone!

If you are finding that Zantac helps, then Prilosec (Omeprazole) will help even more, it reduces acid production to a greater degree than Zantac.

Hi, in answer to: "what's "pink ladys". apples....
they are on the expensive side. In Denver we pay 3.00 a lb., back East this summer, I was buyng them for 1.29 a pound.
They are tart/sweet, and the freshest apple I have found. It may have something to do with the amount of pectin in them. I don't know, not an apple expert, but I do KNOW THIS, THEY WORK, AND ONLY THIS KIND WORKS FOR ME. yOU CAN TRY "FUJI'S", ALSO.
wHEN WE THINK ABOUT HOW WE COMPLICATE OUR BODIES WITH MEDICATION AND ALL THE RESULTING SIDE EFFECTS, no... i WOULD RATHER EAT APPLES ALL DAY LONG. aLSO AGAIN, KEEP A FOOD DIARY.
OUR STOMACH SIMPLY DOES NOT LIKE CERTAIN FOORAB.
THE BIBLE SAYS "CHOOSE LIFE". i LIKE TO think I do with with fooRAB.

best to you. Happy and healthful New Year

What are "pink lady" apples?? Would any kind of apples work even like green which are sour? Next time i go grocery shopping i will buy some. Darn i was there today too. I see the doctor on wednesday so we will see what he wants me to do as far as medicine. Im thinking he might try me on something until he tests me for ulcers, hiatal hernia, and reflex.

Hi TEdwarRAB,

I'm just getting over a bout with the stomach flu. My husband had it and the I came down with it Christmas morning.

I had yellow stools/diarrhea from I thought that. I never thought about the Prilosec. My urine has been more yellow too. Makes me wonder. I've had belly pains too.

I tried Pepcid AC and it did nothing for me. My reflux is just too bad.

Let me know how you do with the Zantac?

Thanks.

Chantal

Oh thanks for clearing that up, lol, that was my apple lesson of the day :) Like i said in my other post, i wont have to get an endoscopy done yet but my doctor said that i probably will have one within a year from now.

Hi Chantal! Well there reason I ask about the yellow stools/belly and intestine pain is because numerous people on another site have all given there stories specifically about Prilosec and this was one of the main complaints. I have been off it for 3 days now and I am finally having my stools looking a little better in color. (sorry to be graphic) The pains have subsided. It was like violent diarrhea that gave me a cut in the anus that bled. I have to becareful about that because I have that issue to deal with. ugh!

I just find it ironic that I was fine with stools before the Prilosec, and bad after a few days on it. And now returning to normal after about 3 days off. Now I need to start on a different med. This will be tricky. Whew! Taking meRAB are tricky because ya never know whats causing certain body symptoms. Such as could yours have been the flu? I have no signs of any flu at all. I was fine otherwise. That is why I KNOW it has to be the med. Too many other people have said the same thing. It even gave me anxiety, tired...etc..

So what can we take? What can we do to cure this? I am going to have a scope on Jan. 9th and what if they want to put me on some other med? I just have no faith in prescriptions. I am so allergic to so many things. My body is sensative. I already have one autoimmune disorder.

I am exploring every natural thing I can take or do to cure this.

Hi again,

I too am very sensitive to meRAB and wonder what will happen if I have to try something new.

I've not heard a lot of great things about any of the PPIs.

My mom takes Prevacid every day and does OK with it but she used to take Prilosec and did OK with that too.

I think I was having the yellow stool while I was taking the Pepcid too and my GI doc said it was from food passing too quickly through my system.

Do you have any rib cage pain? I have some on the right side but my gallbladder is working and didn't show signs of disease on my HIDA scan. The only thing is that I had a higher than normal ejection fraction. My primary Dr and my GI did not seem concerned.

I also have a hiatal hernia and am going through perimenopause. Both Drs feel that fluctuating hormones could be making this reflux worse.
