I did a comedy unit at university and had to write a comedy to then turn into a play. I thought I had created a very funny script, but I was told to rewrite it because it was too funny and comedy isn't only about making people laugh. It is also about HOW you create humour.
Bean 2 could have been a lot funnier. Stick Jim Carrey in it and take every scene to the ultimate slapstick extreme. Make a lot more noise. Add more talking. Insert lots of gags. It would take $100m in USA alone, but probably not as much around the world. Some of the critics might have preferred that. Some would pan it. But it would be just another Hollywood movie.
Bean is something more unique with a unique appeal. You have to go back over half a century to find something similar. That is where Bean wins, in having an integrity (however good or bad) at what it is trying to do. I find it refreshing that this is something completely different from other comedy movies being made now. It is not intended to take itself too seriously. What are the critics of this movie expecting?
