Just watched the trailer and was really disappointed. In my opinion, the opening black and white shots are totally deceptive. They lead you to think that you're about to watch a slick, stylised film noire-esque spy thriller, something in the vein of Sin City meets Raymond Chandler. How wrong! less than 15 seconRAB in and were back to watching a pastiche of all the usual Bond cliche's with one obvious omission - Bond himself. But wait, who's that? Surely not? No... Are they serious? Daniel who?
Now don't get me wrong. I have nothing against updating the Bond franchise. I was all for Quentin Tarrantino directing Casino Royale, it would have been amazing, can you imagine? A true supercharged-007-fanboy meets romper-stomping-18-certifcate-ultra-badass Bond. Thats Mr. Bond, to you, by the way. Maybe its just me but I can't help thinking it would have been a perfect partnership indeed.
I know Mr Craig has received all sorts of abuse for looking the way he does (or not looking the way we expect, perhaps) so I'll avoid jumping on that bandwagon, but honestly I just can't see this relationship working. The Bond franchise has a very loyal and dedicated following, attracts massive mainstream interest and literally spawns generation after generation of fan, but this movie... There's just too much bad press accompanying this movie (and in particular the casting choice) to win over all the naysayers and army of Craig-Is-Not-Bond hatemongers. I just can't see a quantum turnaround in public opinion happening, and, on the strength of the tralier, I am now even less convinced.
So after all the dust has settled, I wonder who'll be the next Bond?
And for the record On Her Majesty's Secret Service was a fantastic Bond movie - despite the supposed miscasting of George Lazenby - its still up their with my all time favourites.
