Hi everyone,
We recently bought a new to us house and am now looking at getting BEV. There is a expressvu dish on the house. There is one LBN? (or whatever you call it) on the dish. There is a Y arm and a spot for another LBN I think.

There seems to be satellite cabling in the house already. I'm not sure if all of it is satellite cabling or some of it may be the old Rogers cabling.

Our situation is:
Right now the SD tv is located in the living room. We would leave the TV there for now and use it until we get something better. We have a family room but no furniture for it yet.

In 8-12 months from now we would like to move the SD TV upstairs and put an HD TV in our newly furnished family room. We would not need the TV in the living room anymore.

What is the best way to go about this.

Should we get the all in one, sign up for 2 years and have the tech hook up the extra cabling that we will need for next year?

Should we buy or rent SD receiver?

The current cabling in the living room is expressvu and needs no extra installation, just a receiver. Should we buy a receiver and sign up now with no or a 1 year contract and then resign an HD all in one next year?

What are our best/cheapest options?
Thanks for any help

If you don't need something now, I wouldn't pay for it. (HD for example).

Buying vs renting is a personal choice. I own all my SD receivers, but rent the HD one as there will be some new ones coming out soon (or at least relatively soon - within a year)

A single LNB is good enough for SD tv. When you go HD, then I'd go for a package deal as that will include a switch install. It isn't that hard if you want to do stuff yourself, there are a number of good threads with picture on how to setup the equipment, but it can be just as easy (and often free) to let Bell handle it for you.

There is many options available:

A)Buy receivers from an existing client and open an account. There would be a 35$ transfer charge, but you won't have to sign a contract. If further on you would like to add HD you would pay the HD Upgrade kit on a credit card, have the LNBF professionally installed, and you will be refunded on you Express Vu account after you activate programming requiring Nimiq 2 upgrade. You won't get any discount or new client's rebate that way

B)Rent or purchase new receivers and open an account. They will ask you to sign a 1 year or 2 years contract. I recommend that you take the 2 years since you will get free install in that case. You will also get the new client's promo if you sign for 2 years. Right now new clients get
10$ off for the first 10 months. You could also, at the time add Nimiq 2 programming (Sports 3-Variety 3-AOV Movies-Internationnal channels or even Salt & Light which is only 2.50$) to make sure that they will hook up the second LNBF and that you won't have to do that later

C)Get all ready now... Purchase or rent an HD receiver now, sign a 1 year or 2 years contract. You will get the 10$ off for 10 months if you have a 2 years contract. Your house will be all wired up when you are HD ready

If you get up to 4 SD receivers now on a 2 year Term, ALL the installation would be free, New Dish, and all 4 lines. Adding a Theme that requires 82 degree reception would also allow you to get the required switch installed for free too. You wiring would then be HD ready.

As Rental fees for SD receivers is only $3 each per month, that works out cheaper than say installing 1 SD receiver and having 2 additional lines run, they would cast you $50 each, plus possibly the charge for a switch.

My understanding is also that if within 10 days you decide not to continue with Express Vu you could cancel your Rental agreement and Express Vu would take back all the receivers. I am not sure if you just send back say 2 of them, I am sure Agent will chip in here anytime soon to tell you this fact....

If you are not ready for HD right now, just rent SD, then 12 months from now look into it again. There is no point paying for HD receiver rental if you are not going to use it.

Thanks for the replys.

If I open an account and buy a used receiver, no wiring or installation needed, and in 8 months get HD then am I responsible for getting the upgraded LNB, the extra wiring and switch?
Can I sign up to a 2 year plan then and get the install done for free?

What they will offer down the road is speculation, but the current offering is that the upgrade to the dish for HD will be done at no cost (well, pay on credit card and get refund on your account).

If you open an account buying used receiver you would have to pay the installation (if required), a transfer charge of 35$ and you won't be eligible for any new client's promo. On the other hand you will have no contract, and be free to leave anytime you want with a 30 days notice.

In 8 months when you want to upgrade to HD you will be eligible for the "Nimiq 2 free upgrade" if the promo is still in place and get the receiver installed free of charge.
