Dr. Plastic, You're the first person I've seen that used the same button I did! My '07 FLTR came with a radio, but I have *no* use for a radio on a motorcycle. I removed the radio, made a plate for the hole, & mounted my GPS there. That left all the radio buttons available so I chose the same button you did. Like you said, "never take a hand off the bars". My opener is 12V so I wired it common with the GPS. It only works if the ignition is on & never needs a battery change.

I don't like the idea of a battery change every year if it's under the fairing. I just purchased a Radio Shack #21-100 12V to 9V DC adapter for $1.50 on Ebay. Now I can hard wire my spare 9V garage door opener under the fairing to the back side of the cigarette lighter plug. I'll solder wires to the adapter plug and solder them to the fairing cig lighter terminal wires. I'll cut the plug off the adapter and solder them to the garage door opener battery terminals. Then the garage door opener will only be powered when the ignition switch is on and no batteries are required. There are a number of methods on this site for the opener activate switch but I like the Screaming Eagle double pole switch idea for my Ultra Classic. There are a number of GMRS/FRS radio car adapters available that convert 12V to 9VDC. Be sure to get the polarity right when you solder them up as I don't know if they have polarity protection. I'll post some pictures when it warms up here in Minnesota.
 
Take a look at your wiring diagram. The two spare connectors off the headlight harness are common with the cig. lighter. All you need is a pair of spade connectors & you can plug in there & accomplish the same thing without solder.
 
HDnutcase. The battery in my remote lasts 5 years! i have had the remotes 10 years and only replaced it once. Plus the way mine is set up all I have to do is remove the headlight reach in and grab it (there is enough wire to work with) change the battery, stick it back up on the box and reinstall the headlight. Takes all of 5-10 minutes.
 
Such a simple, easy and cheap idea, I don't know why I didn't think of it. I'm glad I saw this post. $2.39 for a simple push button switch from Radio Shack, my garage door opener, 12" of telephone wire and a small soldering iron and a little patience and only one beer. Greay Idea guys.
 
Me personally think it is more work making a converter for the 12v to 9v than it is taking the fairing off when needing to change remote batteries. My batteries in my remote may actually last longer than I will own the bike
 
Actualy I did not have to take the outer fairing off. I used my small remote, about the size of a ligher. I zip tied it under the left side of the fairing and tucked the extra wire up under the fairing. Easy to get to when i have to change the battery.
 
I'm wanting to use the odometer push button method for my garage door opener. Does anyone know what the difference is between 67854-98 (Electra Glide odometer reset switch) and 67488-04 (Road King odometer reset switch)?
 
Subscribing so I can find this thread again. Might try it. Tired of digging my opener fob out of my pocket. Especially in winter, with full- finger gloves.
