I too have been riding longer than you've been alive and all previous posts offer good advice. Good tires=new tires. You don't need to spend the $$ on dual compound etc. You just need to find a good, clean used bike that isn't too heavy. Ride it around for a year or so then get your Ducati. Just remember if you you have a girlfriend you may not be able to afford both
 
first place you should look is on craigslist. I look regularly just because I wanna see what's out there, and there are soooo many good deals because people need cash.

My girlfriend started on an 03 r6 which got stolen, now she has an 05 600rr. She finds them easy to ride and hasn't got into any trouble, then again, she has much less testosterone than a 21 yo male.

Take your time, look around, there are great bikes everywhere to be had for cheap
 
Definitely Craigslist & Ebay, I was sorely tempted a couple of times but i've never owned a new vehicle and, well, this was it. Gotta admit, love that new bike smell and the thought that no one else has touched the saddle.
 
I meant exactly what Dr No meant. A bike tire isn't like a car tire. A car tire you can run down to 30% tread and it's not the end of the world, a bike tire if it gets even slightly squared off or has a flat spot in the middle and you'll have it jump wide mid corner. Don't cheap out and get a harder or "touring" compound tire either, if you do corner hard it has a greater chance of losing grip on the road and you're done. I'm not saying you need race slicks either but stick with the known brands too.

For the record any sport bike isn't a good first bike but we all know what being 21 is like, get what you love, learn hard lessons and live to do the right thing next time. The only reason I worked my way up on sane bikes is because with a 500 dollar budget mid eighties small displacement Japanese was all I could afford and I just wanted to ride so bad I didn't give a damn what it was.
 
Don't make my mistake and buy your first bike new.... as soon as you are able to upgrade you will (which will probably be only 12 months later), and hence lose a lot of money in the resale...better off buying a decent yet affordable 2nd or 3rd or whatever hand bike you like, that way if you drop it... no biggie, plus you wont lose as much when you upgrade. Oh insurance will be cheaper too.
 
To suggest that sport bikes in general are a bad idea for a first bike is a bit extreme me thinks...just my opinion...pretty wide brush there my friend...

Too many factors to consider when making such a wide statement as this...

As I graduated college (near your age) I was looking at a motorcycle myself. I was pretty dead set on a brand new R6 but the thought of it scared the piss out of me.

As I rolled up to the Yamaha dealership, there was a used Monster 620 dark in the lot. I loved it. I got it.

A year later I've since sold it and got an 848, but I HIGHLY recommend a used monster as a starter bike. Great versatility, and performance.. also with enough power to scare you at first yet something to overcome and grow from.

I started back in 02 on an SV650, great first bike. not a full sportbike, about 70-80hp, decent torque, and easy to drive. My dad bought it for me new so we could ride together. Anyways, While I never crashed, I did drop the bike in the driveway the first day I had it. Almost shit my pants trying to explain that to my dad since I wasn't supposed to be messing with it. Lesson learned.

Make sure you take the safety course, best thing I ever did to start my riding career.

I've been all over craigslist for a very long time. My only problem is how do I know if I'm getting a good deal or not?


I'm all for Craigslist, cause I get to meet the other person face to face. Ebay I just don't trust really.

Ha! I wish I had the money to buy a bike new! Not to mention I still have to factor in the price of gear!


I've found quite a bit of Monsters on Craigslist, relatively good prices to me too. Definitely a possibility, if I can't have a Superbike, atleast I can still have a Ducati, right?


Dropped it on the first day? That has to suck! I took my MSF course back in January. Those little 250s were actually kind of fun.

my first bike was a ducati 750ss 99mod. i would say its a good beginnerbike,because it have moderat power,great handling and very stabile.maintenenscost are not that high.and its a ducati,and a nice looking one.
