New Guy Need help

Thank you so much for your input and responding to my plea. Unfortunatley in Canada we don't have what you would call teaching hospitals. The only altenative I have is to have my G.P refer me to the University of Ottawa Heart Institute, one of the very best in Canada and it is only 60 miles form where I live and that is what I am currently working on. I am going to post an update hopfully today for all of you very kind and helpful people to read if you are interested.

Being a new guy here I am unsure if I this is proper or in the right posting area, so forgive me if I am in error.

I live in Quebec, Canada and I am having a major problem with my family doctor being gross negligent treating me. I need advice from anyone who has had the same or a similar experience as to what I can do to force him to move ahead without further delay.

I am a 63 year old male with prostate cancer, need bypass surgery on my left leg for a completely blocked artery and if it isn

My heart goes out to you...it's difficult enough to have serious health concerns without dealing with inept medical personal and an ineffective/inefficient medical system...seems no country is immune.

Not being a Canadian, I have nothing to offer as to your current providers...but what did come to mind is the possibility of teaching hospitals. We have them in the states...and you've gotta have them in Canada. In the states, these hospitals are often staffed with the best and services are free or on a sliding scale...again, I don't know what the situation is in Canada, but you might want to check out that possibility. For that matter, you might want to check out teaching hospitals in other countries...

I wish you the best...hopefully, someone will be able to offer you support that is specific to your situation.

Thank you so much for your input and I think maybe I made the Canadian Health system look worse that it really is. I spent the weekend with my closest friends and they are from Atlanta Georgia and Florida. We discussed both health care systems and believe me if I understood what they told me, both systems have major flaws.

Hi Pete,

I can't believe what inept doctors you are dealing with! When the GP sent you to the heart doctor, the heart doctor should have decided what tests to perform and scheduled them pronto. Around here if your GP sends you to a Specialist,
the Specialist is the one that decides what to do and only reports what he/she
is doing to the GP.

I think you should go the an Emergency Room and complain of bad chest pain. That will get the ball rolling. They should admit you for tests and hopefully perform an angiogram/angioplasty. When they ask about your doctors, be brutally honest about them. They are a dangerous combination, those two!
If they try to bring in either, say you do not want to be treated by them in any capacity and they will have no choice but to bring in a Cardiologist who should get things going to improve your health NOW. Plus the blood clot in your leg needs to be monitored closely so it does not move and go to your heart.

I hope I'm not scaring you. I've had a lot of experience being the wife of a man with heart disease. He had his first attack/arithmia when he was 37.
From the emergency room here, he was taken by ambulance to John's Hopkins Hospital, less than an hour from home. He had his 1st bypass then. Six yrs later he had another incident and had an angioplasty and stent put in. Six yrs after that, another bypass.

Each time he presented with pain or blockage to a cardiologist, they acted fast and I thank God they did. I hope you take my advise about this. It's time for you to become proactive in your health care - you sure can't leave it up to those 2 so called doctors.

I believe in Canada you have socialized medicine. Healthcare for everyone. Thats what people are trying to get here. What a disaster. Your doctors are incompetent and are not treating you properly. And treatment takes forever. You seem to have serious problems and need help ASAP. My heart goes out to you and I hope you can find help. If at all possible you should change doctors.

Are you close to the border? Well, just step on over and report to the nearest university affiliated teaching hospital. Present yourself to the emergency department and get the proper treatment. Once your health is better, than start investigating a new group of doctors.
 
I am canadian and very grateful to have our health care system. i've had two major surgeries quickly after being diagnosed and by very good doctors. i'm in saskatchewan.

since our health care is free, my advice to you is what has been told, go straight to emergency complaining of chest pains and tell them what your doctor told you and tell them how you have been treated. they will take care of you. you have unfortunately had very bad luck with doctors.

i'm young and have gone into the er with bad gas and got a full workup and they checked my heart and everything, it was kind of embarrassing to find out i needed to just have a good burp, and be given a prescription for it, but at least i knew i wasn't having a heart attack.

they will take care of you. go now, you have been waiting too long.
