Hello all,

12/20 I had a microdiscectomy waking up with no leg pain. After 7 days I got severely sick from pain meRAB and was vomiting. After the vomiting the next day my sciatic leg pain came back. I saw the doc a couple of days later and he prescribed me a steroid; prednisone. I was to follow up in 3 weeks but after still experiencing pain I went back and got a new MRI. The mri showed a fragment however he didn't think it was something large enough to cause serious pain. Since I was walking well now he thought I was actually doing well. He prescribed me with celebrex and said Ill see u in a week. The following week I went back still in pain; no better. Again he said the same thing to me; your walking I think your gonna be fine its just going to take you time to heal mind you the MRI does show a fragment on my disc he operated on. I started to cry and he questioned my cries and again I explained I am in pain everyday after standing 20 mins, after sitting, after laying down and he told me "don't do the positions that hurt you". ..... okay. He then advised me not to come back for 3 weeks. I walked out of there in tears cause still after the surgery I am still in pain. I decided to get another opinion because it was obvious this doctor didn't want to help me. I decided this time on seeing a neurosurgeon. I got my MRI's and was able to go in the next day. This doctor actually showed me both MRI's (which my first doctor didn't show me the 2nd MRI). He pointed out to me the herniations on the first and then showed me the 2nd. I told him I had the surgery on 2 levels; l4-l5 n l5-s1. He pointed out there was no way the doctor did the surgery on l5-s1 because it looked identical to the first mri. He also showed me the fragment on l4-l5 which was very noticeable. He told me I had every reason to be in pain that this was def sitting on my nerve. He gave me options; told me to stop taking the celebrex because in his experience it thins blood, told me i could get another epidural or he would go back in and remove the fragment or he could speak to my doctor and ask him to do it. I felt a great sense of trust in this man since he gave me options, showed me my MRI's and was willing to help me. I am so nervous though now because I trusted the first doctor n he wants nothing to do to help me, and lied to me about the operation. I have been in so much pain this weekend and cannot go on much longer like this. I want to admit myself to the hospital and tell them I cannot leave until someone takes this out of me.:mad::mad:

Did the neurosurgeon offer a recommendation? It would seem, since you are still experiencing all the same symptoms as pre-surgery that the nerve is still compressed. Having an injection will probably only prolong the whole experience but not do much with that bone fragment.

It sounRAB like you have lost faith in the first doctor, so I cannot imagine that you want him to continue to treat you...so you can continue on with this neurosurgeon or get a third opinion.

I think if I were in your position, I would be tempted to just go ahead and get that fragment out of there. If you're young and healthy, I would think you could tolerate a second anesthesia so soon after the first. This would be something you would need to discuss with your doctor before making a decision. But in a way it would be easier to do it now, as you haven't lost all the time recovering from the first surgery, only to do it all over again.

You definitely do not want to just go to the hospital! Then you would risk getting whatever surgeon is on duty then...not that they would operate right away anyway, as it would not be considered an emergency. At most I imagine they would give you something for the pain and tell you to see your spine doc. You want to be in control of what happens to you....you want to choose the doctor and the method of treatment. If you are comfortable with the neurosurgeon and you've checked out his credentials and experience, you might want to make another appointment with him. Tell him you want him to treat you and then ask his recommendation...ask all your questions about having another surgery so soon and then make an educated decision.

Good luck, and please let us know how you are doing as you move forward.
