New Bike, noise....cause for concern?

Hey everyone,

The names Josh and Im a pround new owner of an 06 M50 and I'm having a blast. Ive only had my bike license for less then a week and ive managed to tack on 400 km so far. I can't get enough!

Now I have a question, which may be obvious to some of you, but is beyond me. When Im riding I get what I can only explain as a bird chirping noise that is constant with the rpm of the engine, it literally sounds like a squeeking that needs lubrication. Its not overly loud and can probably only be heard by myself 'the rider' . Im not sure how else to explain it without actually hearing it.......

I know its not much to go on, but perhaps y'all have some ideas as to what this noise is and what direction i should go in trying to fix it...or is this normal..

The bike now has about 1700km on it, and has had its first maintenance.

I'm going to guess that it's the ticking of the engine, in which case, don't worry to much about it...it's totally normal. That being said, grab your tools and start going around your bike. Tighten up every nut and bolt, and try and get used to doing this....better safe than sorry.

You can also get some squeeking from the gas tank, it's also common.

And don't forget to fill out your profile, i'm guessing with your use of "km's" your a canuck

I really do not believe this noise is coming from the engine, It really sounds like something rubbing, but i just cant figure it out for the life of me, ive gone over the front of the bike closely but cant seem to find anything, when im at an idle and rev i do not get the noise, its only when im in motion and accelerating or decelerating. I may even start taking parts off and then just putting them back on.. I am going to look a bit closer tonight around the gas tank, handlebars, radiator, because thats where the chirpping noise seems to be steming from.

:welcomes:

I had such a noise for a while... couldnt figure it out for a long time until I bumped a chrome trim ring on my front fender with my leg. The metal (casting?) had split...looked fine but was vibrating in sync with bike at speed especially. Took it off in two pieces......birds gone...!

keep lookin....

Check where the rubber meets the metal!! Gas tank is mounted on rubber bumpers and these will sometimes squeak or chirp when tank vibrates. Sit on the bike, not running, put boths hands on each side of the tank and try to move the tank around. Side to side, up and down.. Does this make any noises?

Just a thought.

Is the m50 fuel injected? If so it could possibly be your air box connection to the throttle body. If mine is a tad loose it will make the exact noise you describe, bird chirping on crack.

noise from front you say? ... 400kms.... sounds like what my s50 is going through.... for me it is the front brake. A constant squeal. I hammered on the brakes a couple times, seemed to fix it temporary. With my bike, it has a little brake chatter as i break it in. I know the s50 has a solid rotor(not sloted) and the pads become polished. With that causes the squeal.

Donno if its the same on your bike but chirping and squealing are distinctly different. Probably just hi jacking your post.

Anyhow my bike is in the shop for first service and to get my brake pad cut at an angle of the first corner of contact to the rotor. The shop said it should reduce/stop the squeal.

How much have you taken your bike apart? I ask because when you do things like install a fuel processor, adjust valves, paint your bike, etc., you tend to see so many points were rattles and noises can come from if a screw is loose or rubber washers and bushings fail.

I'll just mention it here although it probably doesn't apply but you never know. I wear a half helmet and a lot of times the wind passing through the chin straps near the ear areas can make a similar sound.

This may sound dumb as well but I've heard a noise almost like metal banging on plastic when I rode at higher speeds. Come to find out, once it was the collar of my shirt banging my helmet then another time it was the chin strap banging on the helmet. Another noise I've been hearing has been a metal clatter when I rode at high speeds. Took months to figure it out. Well it was my license plate not completely fastened. It would vibrate intensely. Tightened er up and noise gone. Most likely not what is causing your noise but sometimes stupid things like that can drive you crazy.:fight1:

HA...that happened to me....I thought something was hanging off and I kept looking down finally I noticed that everytime i looked around the collar would rub my helmet which caused the noise. :fight2:

Had the same kind of problem. I found that the support bracket for the pipes, located just under my seat was coming loose. When your pipes are cool, just locate the mount underneath and try to move the pipes a little. If it's that, you'll notice a squeak.

Ok to solve this chirpping ,, chk your head light,, mine was droped and it cracked the head light cone or main housing, but it made the chirpping noise,. I had to take masking tape and line the headlight ring or bezel with it on the sharp edge like a gasket, to stop the chirpping. You cant see the tape I placed it on the inside of the light bezel itself, right where you place it on the top lip that slips into the main housing, and also around some of the light itself. to stop the glass lens to not touch the chrome bezel
Hope this helps,, was my chirpping prob. :bluethum:

I'm having issues with noises too. But mine is actually sounding at the base of my skull! It's a constant and very fast "ticking". It does not change with respect to the rpm's... it's constant regardless of speeding up or slowing down. It does get a little louder/ higher pitch while accelerating, but not by much.

Pull in the clutch, and the sound goes away... even at highway speeds. It does not make the sound in neutral (moving or still) either while reving the engine.

So since it goes away when I pull in the clutch while moving it isn't something the wind is blowing, else it would make the noise while moving regardless of throttle.

It's kind of like the sound of a sparkplug thats firing and put right up to your ear. It's that sound with the added bonus of a slight percussion in my skull. It's extreamly annoying, and I'm about to scrap the whole demickey'd muffler unless I can find some resolution.

Is this similar to the sound you might be hearing?

Earplugs did the job. But I'm not going to want to be stuffing plugs in my ears each and every time I get on my bike. Hell it sucks having to remove my glasses ever time!

I'm going to have to come up with a better solution.
