Neuropsychological Evaluation

Does anyone know what a neuropsychological evaluation does? It's supposed to find out what kind of memory problems you have, but what does that mean? I've been recommended to take one since they don't know why my memory is failing me and doctors say "it doesn't appear to be" dementia.


Also, could the results of this evaluation set me up to have a "preexisting condition" making it hard to get insurance, if I change my present insurance?
 
As long as your insurance coverage doesn't "lapse" and you have no insurance for a period of time, you should get caught with pre-existing. Changing is not the problem...it's when you get new insurance after having no insurance that people really get caught with pre-existing. Just don't let it run out for even a second.

I was supposed to go for neuropsych testing but it was canceled. The purpose was to try to locate where in the brain the problem was. Just like they can test the brain for sight problems or movement, the areas of the brain where you think is tested by testing the thought processes and memory. I had short term memory problems and lost the ability to write long hand after a surgery where I stopped breathing several times. But it started to come back before the testing could be done.

So I can't tell you what it consists of and of course, it would be tied to what your problem is but the purpose is to try to locate the area of concern so it can be looked at better by the neuro people.

Neuropsychological testing is similar to IQ testing, but it has many different portions, and the purpose of the test isn't to figure out how smart you are, but what types of tasks your brain does well and which ones you have trouble with. It takes a couple of hours, some of it is paper and pencil, some spoken. Just do your best, so they get a good measurement.
 
Many thanks for your feedback. I'm having memory issues but they can't figure out if its short term or otherwise. That's why the want the testing but my insurance won't cover it so it has to come out of pocket. Good info about the lapsing too. Good that it cleared up for you on it's own.
 
Many thanks for your reply. I'm struggling with paying out of pocket or let them treat me for what it could be and hope I don't need it.
