Net.max_halfopen: 50...is changing this safe?

I want to speed up my utorrent downloads but i know that windows
is default at 10 to keep viruses from spreading their seeds quickly if
my system becomes infected...but these slow downloads are driving
me crazy. how many people have used this before and is it safe
and does it really speed up your downloads significantly?
