nerve block

Hi all,

I'm new to this board. Just had guided nerve block today at L4/L5 and L5/S1 for diagnostic purposes prior to lurabar fusion surgery. Test was prescribed by neurosurgeon who is 90% sure that bulging discs and bone spur press on the nerves at these levels, and that is causing my pain in left hip and down leg to top of foot.

Right after having the injections I didn't feel anything in my hip or leg, but this only lasted about 30 minutes. Now the pain is already returning. Seems like a very short time to me.:(

Guess I'll be calling the doc tomorrow - I told him I felt 100% improvement when he questioned me immediately after the injections were done.

Anyway I'm not sure what this all means; the injection was supposed to prove that the fusion surgery would help. But it seems pretty inconclusive to me.

Hi, you have had a positive nerve block and your pain has done exactly what it is supposed to do which reinforces that your doctor has the correct level to work on. When a nerve block is done, nurabing meRAB are injected in the suspected level, if the pain goes away then it is determined they are working on the correct level. If your pain stays intact, your surgeon will have to inject another level. Normally, this lidocane will wear off within 8 hours. Sometimes some individuals but not all individuals will have a reduction of pain for temporary short period of time. Sometimes it takes 2 injections to get this relief and then some individuals do not receive relief beyond the initial hours of the injection. Personally, I only received the short term relief.

When I had it done, the nurabing stuff they injected in only lasted for 30 minutes as well. The pain started coming back on the car ride home. I was also told it should last the entire evening. It is also normal to have increased pain afterwarRAB, and it can take anywhere from 7-10 days for the steroid to kick in and offer any long term relief. My first injection offered no relief, but we know they injected the correct spot because I did have temporary relief from the nurabing medication. I will be trying a second injection, and hoping this time it works.
 
Thanks for your replies, meggs and pepper! Glad to know my results were not outside the norm. Sometimes the doctors share so little, and I don't know enough to ask the right questions.

Also, sorry for incorrectly posting somehow - I really just wanted to let meggs know that I was having a similar result after having the injection. I should have started a separate thread to introduce myself.
