about 10 days ago i had a mohs surgery to remove a superficial basal cell (clear pathology now) and have 8-10 stitches on the back of my thigh. I thought that it was just healing twitches etc. Well... now i've had a reaction to neosporin.. little pinhead blisters and it is red. To top it off, i have a rash from the adhesive too!

I went without covering it and used hydrocortisone for nearly 24 hrs. I went to the store to get polysporin, non-stick paRAB and paper tape. I applied some polysporin with the paper tape/gauze pad. Within an hour it started burning and itching again.

Do you think i'm allergic to both? or just because it was still irritated? I do see the dermatologist tomorrow for something else, i'm hoping she will take the stitches out. I'm supposed to have them in for 2 wks but i'm miserable

While it isn't unheard of, most people can tolerate the polysporin when they can't the neosporin. I'm one...i'd ask your dotor for sure.

Please read ingredients of the polysporin, most likely it contains neosporin too. Believe that is stated on my tube of polysporin.

Ask your doctor for an antibiotic not containing either ingredient.

I am allergic to polysporin and could not find neosporin without polysporin being in it too.

i will! i'm just hoping after tomorrow i will not have to worry about it. I think a week at a time i can handle the adhesive and the ointment.. anything over that.. is another story. The original biopsy, i could use a 1inch bandaid and just rotate where the adhesive stuck to the skin.

i am wondering if i will get a reaction more quickly next time.

neosporin is a triple antibiotic, polysporin is a double. The ingredient that most people are sensitive to is the neomycin sulfate. I'm not going to put anything but hydrocortisone on it till i see the doc tomorrow. I had the original biopsies and used the triple antibiotic/neosporin twice a day for a couple of weeks. It wasn't until she had to cut deeper to get clear margins that i started having problems

there is one more otc antibiotic ointment.. bacitracin.. hopefully i won't have to spend the money and try that one

My adhesive allergy is about 50/50 on severity. I've tried the rotation thing in the past. Used to work at one time, not anymore. I had a burn last year on my forearm. Used a large bandage to protect it. Did the rotation thing with a large band-aid. Ended up at the docs with a cream for the burn and another for the bad dermatitis. It took longer for the allergy to heal than for the burn. I had a scar for about 6 months.

I had 6 steri-strips after a surgery last year. Three of the strips gave me pretty good contact dermatitis and the other 3 didn't. Go figure.

For a while, the foam 3M bandages worked OK for me, until they stopped working.

I had a cyst removed last year. I had about 1 1/2 inch incision with stitches right in the middle of my spine. They paper tape just gave me a big square allergic mark. I took it off after a couple days and just went without. The incision looked kind of "angry" for a while though. You can't win for losing. Oh well...

As for the neosporin/polysporin allergy, my brother has that and just can't use anything at all. He has become more and more sensitive over time.

I have the adhesive allergy like you do. Even paper tape doesn't work for me though. I haven't found any good replacements. Let me know if you find something that works.

Drat! i still have the stitches. Because it is on the back of my leg :( She saw the rash and said yep.. that is from the ointment. She said i could try the single antibiotic ointment (bacitracin) but to test it for a week or so on the inside of my elbow. I think it is just so irritated that anything would make me itch. So i will try a non-stick gauze pad and some vetwrap that i have. She said to use up that since i have it and then get the sleeve like gauze to pull over it. I'm just tired of buying all this stuff and not being able to use it.. unfortunately i'm unemployed
