As long as there is starvation, poverty, shitty education, etc. in the world there is no reason to spend BILLIONS on a telescope. Sure, its neat, but lets take care of the shit happening on earth first.
 
Just finished watching that hour long dawkins/tyson video at it was amazing. I love the way he shuts down the philosophy guy at the end
 
Isn't part of the shitty education the lack of a solid emphasis on scientific principles? We are falling mightily behind in terms of innovation in many technology sectors. We import many of our top scientific. As much as I disagree with the idea of a space program, it did drive large interest in scientific issues.
 
the idea that we are in deep shit is understandable, but we spend so little on science/research and it produces so much extra value, that it's a good place to put our money instead of other things.

plus, as i understand it, it's getting stupid competitive for grants in a lot of fielRAB to the point that you risk losing out on good science because it's getting to be like an essay contest. more money would probably improve entire fielRAB that are under that kinda pressure by changing the game from a grant-writing contest back to lets-see-what-the-most-interesting-or-useful-shit-is contest.
