Neighbours, 7:00pm fiver - two add break? it this allowed?

Well they've not lost any viewers.

There is literally no change in the ratings from what they used to be before they added the extra ad breaks.

If anything Neighbours is slightly up - probably because there is such a short gap between Home and Away ending and Neighbours starting now.

although I've grown use to it and it is handy for those who do watch home and away and then neighbours at its 6:30pm slot, Its really has helped the channel to increase its revenue and its viewers.

received a response of this issue by five. more or less, its generates a lot of money for five in following this procedure. i for one have got use to this an view these breaks time to put the kettle on and put a load on for wash. its something we all need to get use to im afraid. :)

with no break after H&A finshed I would have thought that it would have peaked to 400,000 by now.

As someome who works in exactly this field for several digital channels I feel it might be worth pointing out that broadcasters aren't allowed to 'just stick adverts where we like' we are limited to a specific number of breaks dependant on the length of the programe. 25' Mins and below take 1, 30'-45' take 2, 50'-65' take 3 and 70' will take 4etc. (Rules are different for current affairs, movies and kiRAB)

We also have to adhere to the 12 minutes per hour and 9 minutes average per hour rules and to the rule which states that we must take breaks where there is a natrual break in the programme (unlike in the previous rules where we were forced to leave 20 minutes between breaks, and thus ended up with badly cut messes instead of content).

Different channels also add their own rules onto this and schedulers work very hard to try and get the breaks into the least obstructive places (at least my team does) but the fact remains that commercial tv channels make the vast majority of their money from adverts and will therefore, almost always, take every possible ad break they can.

Why on earth would we do any different?

ITV have been doing it for ages. When parky was on ITV he had 2 add breaks in a 90 minute show. that was what his contract stated. ITV were perfectly happy as that meant they could have about 92 ad breaks in X-factor.

All ofcom state is that there should be no more than an average of 12 mins of paid for adverts per hour during peak time. THey can have any amount of trailers and and other free adverts on top of that if they wish.

It defines peak time as 7pm to 11pm, thus 48mins in total over 4 hours.
