Neighborhood manners...?

I am semi new to my neighborhood and am hosting a neighborhood party
Is it ok to drop off invitations in my neighbor's actual mailboxes? the kind you have to open?
or is that some kind of federal/mail-tampering offense?
I'm only asking b/c we are new to the neighborhood and want to make a good impression
