Negotiating a contract renewal

Have any VZW repeat customers had any luck getting any extra credits/discounts upon renewing? My situation: on a 2-line family plan up for NE2, deciding between Voyager and env2. Either phone would be free after NE2, but because I could keep my $5/month America's Choice II Mobile Web plan on env2 but would have to upgrade to a $15/month Nationwide plan vCast package on Voyager (pay-per-MB is not an option), I'd be paying $240 more for Voyager over the life of the contract. Would either a store CSR or phone CSR be able to offer me any additional credits or discounts to decrease the extra cost of the Voyager over the life of the contract? If so, any advice on how best to approach the situation?

Get ahold of their retention dept. Tell them you're walking without a better deal.
(Research and have that deal on hand to refer to)
When they don't agree, tell them you'll think about it...
hang up, call back later...till you get the deal you want.
Don't forget to throw in free activation and free overnight...
(I bought this plan off ebay, tried it and it works!!!):smart:

You are actually better off not threating to cancel. When you make threats than people tend not to care, plus it makes you seem like a two year old. I would politely ask a customer service repersentative what they can do for you or what they are willing to do for you to renew the contact.

That's been my experience in other contexts- they have a certain amount of leeway and, if you're polite and reasonable, they'll do what they can. Classic example is cable service- if you explain to a retention CSR that, while you have no complaints with their service, you're being bombarded with offers from satellite companies and can't justify paying xx% more to stay with cable, they can almost always offer something, whether it's a better discount package (such as what they offer to new customers) or some free premium channels.

Ellen, good point on the plan switch issue. I have the feeling that I'd be perfectly happy with env2, with its QWERTY keyboard and, from what I've seen, very fast WAP browser. Voyager's more of a question for me- the touch screen seems cool and I like the potential to browse any site w/ the html browser, but I worry about the browser speed (seems slower than enV2, which makes sense given that it's loading an html page rather than the stripped-down WAP version), and I'm really not happy with the extra $10 a month charge for unlimited browsing with VCast under the NW plan. But whereas a trial 30-day run with Voyager would probably be more useful to me, I'd be very nervous switching to NW for a Voyager trial and then trying to switch back to ACII if I decide to go with env2...
