Needs some ideas for framing self made art, like on the decorating shows..?

You know how they will put things in frames you wouldn't think of, like solid color patches of material, or something simple they've made theirselves, or even smaller frames. I even kinda like it when they hang empty frames. I like the geometric shapes, something abstract, maybe. I also have these HUGE frames, like 4 ft. long, with hideous pictures in them, but I'd like to cover the pictures with something cool and paint the frames.
I'm sure theres a website with how-to videos, but i really don't know how to do a good search, or what to even search for. Anyone know a good diy decorating site or have any good tips?
