24/24 completed. I marathoned like 18 episodes in one day and let me just start by saying the title of this thread is incredibly spot-on.
I think that I know what the thought process for the manga was:
"I'll create a fighting seinen manga filled with action panels, action characters and action at every turn. Of course, it may come across as generic sometimes but, hey that's manga."
Here's what the thought process for Madhouse was when they got the rights to adapt this:
"WE'RE BADASS ANIMATORS WHO CAN DO TEN TIMES MORE AWESOME/FANSERVICE THAN ANY **** GAINAX PUT OUT! LET'S BLOW EVERY DOLLAR OF BUDGET ON EVERY EPISODE SO WE CAN MAKE THIS THE MOST EPIC SHOUNEN GENERIC ANIME EVAAAAAAAAAAARR! QUICK! HIRE MU LA FLAGA TO DO THE VOICE OF THE MAIN CHARACTER!"
Okay, I'm exaggerating but at least one of those thoughts must have been in their minRAB.
If I can sum up this anime in one word it is this. Fun. This is the type of show that knows exactly the type of show it is. It knows it has shounen action. It knows it's got tons of pandering fanservice. It knows that it may/may not have plot holes as big as a crater. But it doesn't care. It just doesn't care. It's an adaptation so you might as well have fun with it. This is a perfect show if you just want something to just take in the action and enjoy what's being shown in front of you. You don't need to question it, you just gotta have fun watching it. And that's what made shows like, Gurren Lagann, GaoGaiGar, Gintama and Sgt. Frog stand out. They're fun! They're stuff that you just want to watch if you want to have a fun break from the deep sense of reality and just watch a priest punch a chick halfway across the room with her own technique while he nosebleeRAB at her panties.
Having a plot that sounRAB near-similar to s-CRY-ed is going to turn a few off but really, this show deserves at least three or four episodes to get a handle on (if you can't stand it by then it's not for you). I'm actually glad that I decided to take a break for this and wait for it to finish because nearly every episode started ending in cliffhangers as big as Code Geass. This is not helped of course, by the fact that nearly every two minutes is an explosion, a punch to the face, someone bleeding, or a funny joke.
That's another plus I found to this show. Jokes and Blood. It can be very funny when it neeRAB to be. One of the best ones is when Blade is about to hit an enemy with a gigantic explosive punch. The enemy happens to be close to one of the main characters (who is unconscious) so he pretenRAB to rewrite the anime so that it fits that he's the one who says that it's okay to beat down the enemy...in the middle of the attack! This wasn't like time just stopped to let the joke happen, he's really still flying toward the enemy while animating the scene ("Don't make up a new scene in the middle of the attack!") As for blood, this show is very bloody. In fact, it's like the opposite of Bleach when it started out all splattery and stuff but then it got to the point where Ichigo was just coughing out water instead of blood. In Needless, the fights get very painful at times to watch (a lot of characters like piercing people in the chest...graphically) and it makes it very more interesting.
Now....for the secondary main attraction....the fanservice. There is loli fanservice. A fair bit too. It happens. You're gonna see it. One of the running jokes is that the main character is a lolicon. (Another good joke is that there's this hypnotizing mist that puts all the good guys in "paradise" but Blade is unaffected by it because there's already like six younger-looking girls in the room so "I AM ALREADY IN PARADISE!!!") The fanservice can be jarring but if you can get past two episodes you should be clear. I said in another thread that I was aware that there was service in this anime but I just didn't care. Why? For the same reason I didn't care for the service in TTGL, Elfen Lied, Cutey Honey, and currently Sora no Otoshimono. The story and fight sequences themselves are so awesome/interesting that I just don't care. I wouldn't say this is how to do fanservice "right" but...well it's something....Icing on the cake. That's it.
The characters are what really make the show. Adam Blade is (I'm sorry) quite possibly even louder and over-the-top than Kamina, Guy Shishioh and Domon Kasshu corabined. Really, someone who screams so loud that the animation itself changes to reflect their personality gets some cred. He is a hapless lolicon but on the other hand, his taunts and attitude are a great sense of awesome that you completely forget those habits. I wish I could say more about Eve and I do think the running joke about how she can't remeraber anyone's name is humorous but outside of actually being able to kick some ass, she's really just the spunky/genki girl you see in shounen. Well, at least she can make a drill arm. Now [strike]Yamada[/strike] Cruz is an interesting case. You'd think he'd be more like Simon or Shinji and eventually man up enough to become the main character. Well he does man up but, surprisingly, I still feel Adam is the main character since Cruz never really gets any powers. I do like though that he's still extremely useful that he can figure out the enemy's abilities and how to counterattack. In some cases, that makes him even more dangerous than Blade.
The last plus is toward one of the most amazing OST's I've ever heard. It's like Detroit Metal City+Metalocalypse on the ultimate high. There's hard battle rock at nearly every minute (except for sentimental scenes where they will usually end up playing an instrumental of the first OP Modern Strange Cowboy which is very nice). Modern Strange Cowboy and Scarlet Borab are very good OP's even if Scarlet Borab is a bit standard j-pop after the rocking modern strange. The ED's...well, I don't think I can link those...you can look those up for yourself.
There are minuses. I already said the fanservice and somewhat generic plot will not grab many. But for nearly a third of the series, they end up fighting some of the bad guys in this one room. This one room and they don't leave. Granted, it's not like there's nothing happening. There is an awesome fight and the animation jumps to eleven (also one of the episodes is a flasrabroadack) but still, one....room. The "Battle room" apparently. Also, this is an adaptation so it had to do it's own ending. It actually wasn't bad and it could have been much worse but it could have been better paced and not so "Well, obviously, this was how it was going to end."
If you want dilemas and philosiphical dialogue or a show that shows little to no fanservice, this isn't for you. However, if you want incredibly well animated action sequences, a show that clearly knows the genre it's in and punches it hard in the gut, don't mind the panties sometimes thrown in your face, and just want to have fun watching a good show, You should check out the Needlessly awesome...well, NEEDLESS!
