There was no mention in the initial post of how/why the rider was nearly taken out.

Loud pipes won't be heard over a loud stereo, bright lights can be confused for a car which looks further away and hi vis clothing can lull riders into a false sense of security, they also break up the shape of the rider - in some circumstances this will make it harder for another road user to see you.

Proper defensive motorcycle riding and training is key - you HAVE to lower the odds to your favour. Always ride in the correct gear for a given situation, always consider you road position and speed - where will be the best place to be at any given moment. You have to think and react constantly rather than just ambling along riding by rote.

Junctions are typical scenarios of where the likelihood of contact increase so start looking for the danger signs, be prepared rather than barrelling in.

If you can remove the word SUDDENLY from your riding vocabulary then you will gain the all important TIME TO REACT.

A dark colored motorcycle is only part of the problem, You can't do much to change that part of the equasion. But, you can change your riding attire which shows up more than the bikes color. A white helmet should be considered. An orange, lime or at the very least a white jacket or vest will help to save your bacon. Reflective patches or stripping on them is a big plus. While modulating headlights are not legal in all jurisdictions, the decaying tail lights are 50 state legal. These are all arrows in your "safety quiver". Black may be beautiful but it sure is hard to see, expecially at night. Slow down when going through intersections. Being aware of what is going on down the road for the next 8-10 seconds give you a big jump too. Like everything else in life it is our decision that play a big part in our destiny.
 
I'm a firm believer in the "They're all out to kill you" school of thought. I'm ATGATT. Put a set of Hyper lites on the license place bracket, which are great. In front I put a pair of Piaa 1100X's mounted down by the brake pads. My jacket is also Hi-Viz. All together, it makes a substantial difference. Now when they cut in front of me, or tailgate, etc, I know it's NOT because they can't see me!

I have them and I can tell you, I look like a freight train coming towards you. It's almost impossible not to notice someone with these puppies. I did a Rider's Edge class last weekend and one student and the other Instructor (a motorcop) are probably going to end up getting them after seeing me ride up. I've seen bikes with them on the other side of divided highways and it's amazing how my eyes gravitate to them. I don't think it's because I have them, but because they are different than what we're used to seeing on the road. They're extremely bright too and very effective in daylight.

Without going into a bunch more detail (which I'm prone to do) just check out the videos on their website and call the company and talk to the owner about why they work so well.

They're spendy, but the quality is un-matched. Come in several finishes too.

I have had the pulsing light kit, the high beams on, tried brighter lamps and the cagers still come on. I drive as defensively as can be imagined, I watch up to five cars ahead and will wait at intersections with cars easing up as I know the A--holes won't stop nor do they "See" me. Best bet is if they are going to hit you make it painful on their part and make sure you get all you can from the insurors, maybe that will wake the idiots up.

You just will not catch a break on a bike, don't expect leniency.
 
I used to drive firetrucks. Flashing lights, 2 sirens and an air horn. People still pulled out in front of me. Buy all the lights ect you want but in the end your well being is up to you.
 
i install whelen siren....and always turn it on in the intersection or when ride into danger/crowded area....all traffic will clear suddenly....hehehe...
whelen siren is LOUD !!!
