The first was a science fiction story about an inventor who created a self-replicating machine. That machine would make smaller and smaller copies of itself, using raw materials that it found in its environment. Due to some sort of logic error, it had no limit on the number of generations of itself that it would produce and it ended up threatening Civilization As We Know It.
The second story is about an eccentric graduate student whose thesis is a computer mounted in a box - artificial intelligence, I guess you could call it. Basically the box outsmarted the student, as the graduate committee awarded the box the Ph.D because it answered the questions and not the student.
