origins of State (Civilization)? Our professor hasn't exactly given us the gift of time when it comes to writing this comparison paper on two different theories pertaining to the origin of state (warfare, irrigation, trade, system model, social model, etc.). We must find another scholar's interpretation of the origin of state and compare it Carneiro's 1970 "A theory of the Origin of State".

I have access to many resources, primarily EBSCO, where I can search for peer-reviewed journals. My only problem is that each time I search something with key words, I get over one-million results- many who have nothing to do with the search terms I've used.

I found Algaze's colossal 30 page paper on the importance of the irrigation system and location of early civilizations in Mesopotamia, but after three hours, I'm only on page five. His stuff is DENSE. As I said, I don't have the time to get through something as crowded as his paper- albeit it being a good source.

Please suggest scholars who are known for their support of a theory regarding the origin of state/civilizations that doesn't not involve warfare (ie: not Jonathan Haas). I'm mostly interested in Irrigation models, but at this point, I'd love any leads- at least to narrow down the search results.

Much appreciated.
