I have an 02 civic with 170k miles that has jumped time. In the morning they are going to put on a new timing belt to see if it will run or if it has bent the valves. I need to know: realistically, how much a new or rebuilt engine will cost, and if its worth replacing the engine or getting another car. Keep in mind my credit is quite bad and i will have to get a really cheap car i can pay cash for or go through a tote the note dealer. Thanks for your advice.

It all depends on the rest of the car. Did you buy it new? Any other issues? If you know it's history and trust the rest of the car then why not a new engine? There's so many civics out there it's likeley you can find a cheap engine. Either way, a $1000 engine is cheaper than a $20,000 car. No matter how you look at it, the engine replacement is cheaper. How far you drive to work, etc is a different story but with bad credit and a 17% intrest rate on a new car I'd say replace the engine.

Keep your car and if needed install a rebuilt engine. Im assuming you know the condition of your car and know what you have done to your car. If you get another car, you have no clue how the previous owner took care of the car. You might have to spend $$$$ on a car you dont know the history.
