Need some Historic Dodge Truck help.............?

Ok, so I have a 1980 Slant6 225 Dodge Ram. I removed to Head to get it machined and replace the head gasket. I got everything back together (finally) and while I was messing with all the vacuum hoses I heard a pop and hiss over by the battery. When I looked there was a stream of smoke coming off my ignition relay module.

WTF is that about???? I thought my Air Breather (which was laying on the battery) touched both battery terminals and caused a short or ach or something. After that I couldnt get the truck to turn over so I replaced it and got it to turn over. Problem Solved. I continued hooking up vacuum lines.

Went to fire up truck.....nothing. No turning over, no clicking no nothing. Checked everything, and the freaking thing started popping and sparking again. I unhooked my neg. terminal quick, and now every time i touch my neg terminal to battery it achs. Now my relay has 5 blades and a threaded terminal where 1) positive battery hooks up 2) Wire from starter hooks up, 3) 2 wires from ignition hook up. (this is the line that is causing the poping and sparking.) So i either get a arch at the relay or when i hook up my battery.

What gives? It seems to me that there is open line of power thats not closing. But this has never been a problem before, and I didnt mess with anything with the ignition system (untill i had to).

Any thoughts were I should start???????

My guess is
1) bad starter selinoid or
2) bad ignition switch or
3) positive battery cable(s) is grounded itself somewhere. nicks or missing chunks in the insulaton touching the frame etc.

It sounds as if you have wires crossed. Look at the color of the wires going TO/FROM the battery.
Also look to see of the ground (negative) wire is loose.
The best definition of stupidity is to keep doing the same thing when you know what the result is going to be.
