Need Some Advice On A New Cell Phone!!

I would like to get a "smart phone", preferably the Treo 750. Problem is I have T-Mobile and the 750 is only offered by Cingular which isn't compatible with T-Mobile. Is there any way to MAKE it compatible? I don't think unlocking it will work because it's on a different network, right?

The reason I want the Treo so bad is because it is Palm powered so it's a touch screen versus the Blackberry which is operated by a wheel which I don't like. I want the 750 because it doesn't have the bulky antenna and there are a lot of improvements on it over the older models.

The most important features to me are:
1. Email Access (I think Blackberry is the only smart phone that has instant email refreshing abilities, but correct me if I'm wrong)
2. Internet Access (I want to be able to check on traffic reports from my car as well as google or mapquest addresses)
3. Ease of use (Touch screen vs. stupid wheel)
4. Multimedia functions (camera, music, etc)

If you are familiar with cell phone technologies and different models, please list what you think are the most relevant phones based on the criteria I mentioned above.

Since the Treo 750 is on Cingular, it is a GSM device. If you unlock it, you should be able to use it on T-Mo with no problems.

One thing to keep in mind though, Palm is an old, somewhat outdated O/S. The quality of Treos is very suspect in my mind. I had 3 Treo 600s and a 650 and all had hardware issues and were prone to random reboots, almost as bad as WM5 devices.

1) The BB has push email where email is automatically sent to the device every 15-20 minutes or less. You can set up a Treo or WM 5 device to pull your email at regular intervals, but it eats a lot of battery and storage space if you get a lot of email.

2) You need a dataplan of some sort for Internet access and email. I think the screens on any of these devices are almost too small to do things you wish to do however. Plus you shouldn't be doing these things while you are driving. In addition, they are not that fast!

3) Treo and PPCs have touch screens. Trackwheel works great. Try it, you might like it.

4) The BB 8800 and 8100 (Pearl) have multimedia capabilities as well as most of the PPCs and Smartphones.

Great info DubDub, thanks! I have a couple of Qs. What is a PPC? I have tried the trackwheel and am not a fan of it. The touchscreen is so much more user friendly and I like it a lot more. I don't receive THAT much email, but the email I DO receive is pretty important, hence why I want this device. Based on everything I described, it seems the Treo with the Windows O/S would be the best bet for me. Do you disagree? What phone(s) would you recommend instead????

You could go the unlocked route and get a Sony Ericsson M600

touchscreen
trackwheel
qwerty keypad
push email with exchange servers

no camera, but the rest of the stuff is there

Huh??? The Dash does not have touch screen but Cingular 8525 is a PPC thus has a touch screen.

Too bad the SE M600 does not have WiFi.

So the 8525 has a touchscreen, sweet! Is there any difference if I get the HTC version over the Branded one? I noticed on ebay that they're pretty much going for the same price.
