Need New Phone Badly - IPhone 5 & Droid Bionic Seem Best Options, But When and What?

As noted above, I am in dire need of a new phone. My old one is starting to have performance issues, battery issues and glitches. I'm on Verizon, and intend to stay there simply because no one else offers adequate coverage for me.

That said, I am not locking myself into a another two year contract without buying a phone offering state of the art features. This isn't because I absolutely need to own a state of the art phone, but simply because it has to last me the next two years, minimum. And I cannot see any sense in not at least making the choice to delay obsolescence as long as possible during that time.

My clear preference would be an iPhone 5 because I love the interface, but, although it was widely reported, across the board, for quite a while that it would definitely have a 4 inch screen, there now seems to be some question about that. And anything smaller than that is a complete dealbreaker for me.

There is also the question of when it will actually arrive. Some reports say, on time, in July. Other reports place it in September, and still others, even later.

Making it to September would be a real challenge given my current phones issues, but I could probably just manage to hang on that long. If, the 4 inch screen was a definite. Otherwise, I would have completely wasted the time waiting.

That brings us to the Droid Bionic, which again, has been reported to be released as early as July 4th, and also much later than that. Other reports claim it may never be released, or a Droid Targa may be released instead, which may, or may not have the same feature set, or could be something else entirely.

Way too many questions, and not enough answers, and I need a new phone as mine is dying. Can anyone help me out here?

If you are reading Android reports that closely, that means your subconscious is telling you something. Succumb.

I don't know about Targa, it seems Motorola is making a spew of dual core phones. See the ones they got for Sprint for example. But it is starting to look like Droid Bionic is the real thing, and its more beefed up than what was shown on January.

Here is another advice. Try the Samsung Galaxy S2 or any of its US carrier released variations when they come. This for me is the most perfect Android to come fresh out of the box. Yet. The phone literally screams through its benchmarks way ahead of the field.

Actually, there have been recent reports that it might not even come out yet by September and may be delayed until the end of this year or early next year so this can be a big problem if you badly need a new phone.

Agreed, my timing on this is not good. And no really great options unless the Bionic surfaces soon. Sounds like the iPhone is too far out to consider.

I'm in a similar situation... I'm on Verizon and have been researching phones a lot... I can use my last new ever 2 starting on July 1st, so, assuming the tiered data reports are right, it's pretty tempting to renew before July 7th. I want to get a "top of the line" phone, not because I need it.. but because it's a two year commitment.

I'm on a slowly dying 8330 now... so anything will be a huge step up, even a 3g only phone. I don't really see myself getting into watching lots of video online (at least not without using wifi), so part of me isn't so sure that it make sense to care about "locking" unlimited data. I've asked friends who use their phones like I think I would and they hardly break 1GB.

I'm not quite tied to Verizon as ATT does have good coverage for me too. So, I've been looking at phones like the Atrix too -- which would be free for a new account, so takes the issue of paying a $80 ETF off the table (really a wash).

My contact actually ends on November... so it make make the most sense for me to wait for that, forget about locking in the unlimited data, and then go with the best/cheapest phone out in November.

One thing you could do, and folks have done this due to the new tiered plans..

Go to Amazon, get a Palm Pixi, and get data now. Then when the new phones come out, you upgrade your phone, and you should still be grandfathered in.

You don't say what you have now, but that is one option. It will hold you off until the new phones come out, or to at least the holiday season.
