Need medication for combative elderly with dementia?

Risperdal killed my dad, and it was an agonizing slow death. I wouldn't give that crap to any human on the planet. Let her have her combative moods, it's better than poisoning her to death.

My mom was prescribed risperdal for her combative moods. She is 90 with vascular dementia. She sometimes gets very hard to deal with. She was prescribed risperdal but she refuses to take it because she wants to know what it is for and I have not come up with any answer other than it makes you feel better. I need help.

Get her doctor to change the prescription to a liquid form of the drug. And then put it in her food. I had to do this with my 89 year old father after he tried to kill me one morning. (He was getting ready to hit me over the head with his huge metal flashlight--I heard him just in time and was able to swing around and confront him. He tried to pass it off as my "overreacting" but I immediately went to his doctor and got him the drugs!)

You have to make sure she is going to eat all of it, so choose something to put it in that is her favourite. And measure the drug very carefully--it can have nasty side effects if you get the dosage wrong.

My Dad was a PLEASURE to be with the last 4 years of his life, because of this drug. The anger and psychosis just disappeared.

Tell her it's for her heart. That if she doesn't take it she will wind up a vegetable. I know what you're going through. My Grand Mother was the same way. It's really tough to remember what they used to be like and then see them reduced to a dementia state.
