Need help with lice please! Lots of questions..

My head started itching a week ago, after 3 days I realized something was wrong and I started thinking I have lice. So even though no one believed me I made my mom do a listerine/vinegar treatment that I found online on my hair. I think I did it on Tuesday or Wed (like 4 days after it started itching). I didn't see anything come out of my hair..but I didn't use a nit comb. So by the end of the week 3 people told me they didn't see anything in my head..one person checked different areas even. Today I scratched and guess what..it was a baby lice! I went out and got Rid (even though I heard it doesn't work that great, I didn't care). So I used that and then used the comb it comes with and a dog comb (looks like a nit comb but its smaller) and went through my hair..the first time we didn't get a lot, or at least it didn't look that way. Then after the Rid I put the tea tree oil in and then did the combing again..most spots there wasn't anything..then at one spot there was a bunch of stuff on the comb, mostly baby ones that looked dead and about 2 older ones that looked alive for the most part. I didn't find much after that. So we did combings and now I have a cap on my head because I hate bugs and I don't want them near my face.
So now I know I'm infested and I did that..but I know everything can't all be gone already. I have no idea where I got it from. Can lice really live on beds/pillows/clothes? We washed it but I have also seen that they really don't travel far from the head/hair. Would dying my hair work? I honestly kind of want to cut my hair really short now like a boy to get rid of this..but no one is going to cut my hair with lice in it.

Where can you buy the Robi Comb and the real nit/lice comb? Walmart doesn't have them. Also it doesn't seem like nits are coming out of my hair as far as I can tell, I don't really know what to look for in nits. Will a comb really remove them if I use oil with it? No one I know will be able to pick with fingers because they can't see that great. Also, since I started itching last friday, how long have I had these things?? Sorry for the bunch of questions, I'm just obsessed with getting rid of this and want to find out as much as possible. Thank you.

You need to make sure that when you are doing your treatments and removal that you and the person helping you go almost hair by hair looking for those nits. Outside of the comb, I find that using my fingernails and pulling the nits down the length of the hair is the best way to go after those stragglers. I can never get them well enough with gloves. I just wash and sanitize my hands afterwards.

You absolutely need to be doing a thorough cleaning at the time you do the hair treatment. Bedding and pillows washed with hot water is a must. Make sure you vacuum your couch, car seats, etc. Vacuum also. Throw out the bag after vacuuming and clean the vacuum. For items such as stuffed animals, seal in a plastic trash bag and leave for a couple days. There are also lice sprays that can be used on furniture. Make sure you are also cleaning brushes and combs as well.

If thorough cleanings and removal of nits have been accomplished, there should be no need to cut your hair.

Use Rid, make sure you leave it on for a good long time, and it should work

You must remove the nits one by one with your fingernails or a tweezer and if i were you i would definately wear plastic gloves. You must definately wash all pillows, sheets, blankets, etc. in hot water and dry in the dryer this will kill them. Yes they do go on pillows, and you definately got it by someone you had head to head contact with that is the only way. As for hairbrushes, combs, etc if you plan on keeping them you must put them in a pot and boil them. Clothing items that cannot be washed right away should be sealed in a garbage bag, they cannot survive off the human head for long. You must definately get rid of the nits and repeat the treatment in seven days even if you feel you don't have any. The little lice combs can usually be purchased at the pharmacy and most of the time you also get one in the shampoo package. Vinegar helps the nits to slide off the head. As for prescription meds to get rid of them yes there are some that would kill them but doctors don't give them out that easily as they are not that safe. If rid does not work for you then try kwellada or another brand that you may find at your local pharmacy. Hope you get rid of this problem soon, and if you wish to cut your hair, go ahead it's just hair it'll grow back. Good luck.

one word. COCONUT!! I bought the medicine which left the lice alive. I bought some stuff that is safer because it contained no pesticides and it left the lice alive. I researched and read about coconut shampoo. I didn't have any but I did have coconut body wash. I put it on my daughter's head as a shampoo while she bathed. She stayed in the bath about 20 minutes. I rinsed and then used a lice comb. I got out 3 DEAD bugs. I was so surprised they were dead. My oldest brought it home from school and gave it to my two year old. What a nightmare. Don't buy the exspensive shampoo with coconut the cheap one will do fine. I also read up on neem oil. It stinks but I hear it's good. I also vacuumed beds, couch, recliner. I washed all bedding.
