January 2nd is her birthday. This conversation happens on New Year's Eve.
Let's say, for the sake of argument, the conversation happens on New Years Eve of 2000 (12/31/2000). This means that last year's (i.e. 1999's) New Year's Day would be 1/1/1999, when she was 19. On 1/2/1999, she turned 20. The next year, on 1/2/2000, she turned 21. And now, the day after tomorrow (1/2/2001), she will be 22.
