I have been on Sub for about 5 months. Right now I take 1/2 pill of 8mg/2mg in the morning and the same at night. I want to start tapering but I don't know what to do. My doctor said tapering is not the best thing and that my last pill should be a whole 8mg/2mg and then just deal with the 3-5 day withdrawals with the help of Clonidine and Tramadol. What I want to know is has anyone done a successful tapering? If so, what worked for you? I really feel ready to be off of it but I dread the withdrawals. Any help out there?

Hi blarabert,

I am currently doing a sub taper and am down to 0.5mg/day. This is how I did it:

Reduce by 25% of the total daily dose and maintain that dose for a period of four full days while experiencing no w/d symptoms it’s safe to reduce again by another 25% and expect the same results. If you experience any w/d symptoms during the four day period you can take a .25 - .5mg sliver (depending on your existing dose) and the w/d symptoms usually dissipate immediately. If you require slivers to remain stable at any level you should start over the next day trying to put four days together again.

Once I get down to 0.25mg I will start skipping days. I will take a dose one day, then skip one day. Then dose again, and then skip two days. Then dose again, and then skip three days. Then dose again, and then skip four days. After four days hopefully I will be finished. The half life should have had time to catch up with itself.

subtaper :)

No, I'm not a doctor....just doing a sub taper as yourself.

Reduce by the 8mg or the 2mg?

By the way...thanks for the response. I'm sure I will need to study this for awhile until I understand it.

What are your w/d symptoms? I have started taking 1/2 of my 8mg/2mg pill once a day. I felt a little anxious and some yawning. Think those are symptoms>

If you are currently taking 8mg total a day and are ready to start tapering tomorrow, you will want to reduce by 25% which will take you down to 6mg for four days. If you have symptoms at the end of the four days, stay on that same dose for a few more days or until the w/d symptoms go away. Then after the 6mg, you'll cut that dose down by 25% which will be 4.5mg, etc. Repeat the above until you get down to 0.5mg. At that time if you feel comfortable you can start skipping days like I explained in the other post. I am going down to 0.25mg before I start skipping days b/c I've had a hard time with the w/d symptoms.
Through alot of reading I found this method, and I read many success stories, you just have to be patient and listen to your body. The 25% reduction is key.

Does that make sense?

Yea, anxiety and yawning are symptoms. I have tons of anxiety..that has been my main battle so far.

I'm doing OK...thanks for asking. In fact, today is the first day I haven't taken my morning Cloinidine for anxiety. It has been about 2 weeks since I cut down to only taking 1/2 a sub in the morning and none at night. I will probably make my next cut in another week. I guess I'll cut it in half and see how that goes. I was amazed at how good I felt this morning compared to other ones. It seems like mornings and early evenings have been the worst for me. Thanks so much for the concern!

Glad to hear you're doing well! I'm the exact same way....mornings and early evenings get bad for me..weird huh?
I'm on 0.5mg once a day and I'll be on this for a little while, then cut down a little bit more. I can't wait until I'm off of this sub! I think I might just have a celebration :)

I'm here everyday if you want to talk
