Need Help Manually Installing APK files on Motorola Droid!!!?

I had a couple of apps that i installed, i tried to update them but they wouldn't update...so i deleted the app. to install the new update because usually that was the trick.....the app never installed, so i tried reinstalling the older version, but now the old version wont install...i don't understand why it wont install after i used to have the app and it ran perfectly....i deleted the cache thinking that was it but still nothing works, if anyone has any tips on how to be able to install those apps, it would be much appreciated
