Need Help learning how to shift my new dirt bike. Its my first bike Yamaha yz80.

Trying to learn.? I recently bought this bike just to learn on. It was a cheap older bike with a smaller engine. I can get it started with the kick starter, but it takes about 10 tries. I can get it going as well, but shifting gears is the hard part. I'm not sure when to shift or how the gears work. Anything helps!!
 
Normally with any bike the shift pattern is - first gear is down from neutral, the rest (3-5 gears depending on the bike) are up from neutral, meaning you hook your toe under the shifter and pop it up to shift to a higher gear. Honestly though, if you didn't have the time or foresight to find out how to operate the controls before buying one or at least before starting one, please offer my condolences to your family when you read this before the inevitable disaster.
