Need Help Identifying cough

This cough has lasted for two weeks now. It started as an "irritating" mild cough that began when I was at home recovering from an intense sunburn. :o

Coughing is not frequent(I can go a good hour or two with no coughing) but when I do cough I will cough myself out of breath and there is no stopping it.
Often accompanies gagging and (once) throwing up dinner.

I cough up some sort of flem but its different from anything I've seen before. Its white. With the consistency of saliva (just a tad thicker). It doesn't get coughed up without a fight. If I intentionally try to cough it up it often leaves me gasping for breath and gagging.

The first coughs of the spasms are usually bigger but they lead to smaller short coughs with no inhale in between

Right now I'm taking NyQuil(sp) to make it through the nights but I'll still sometimes wake up coughing.

I want to know what it is and if I can just wait it out or if i should get it checked out. Going to the Doc. is kinda complicated

Ok, I think that's it. I'll try to answer any other questions you may have.

Sounds like sinus drainage. Could be due to allergies.

Have you tried taking an anahistamine? or Mucinex? Mucinex will help thin mucous.

If it is mostly a dry cough, the following are the most common causes:

  • allergies/sinuses

  • post nasal drip

  • asthma

  • acid reflux

Sometimes it is a combination of things causing the cough.

You could also have picked up some kind of respiratory bug.

You should self-evaluate to see if you feel it is one of the above causes. If you cannot get in to see a doctor, there are OTC things to try for each of these.
