need help getting my dell d610 to work with my Panasonic flat screen tv plzzzzzz?

i bought a VGA cable and i hooked it up to the tv, then i went to my computer setting and changed it to 2 so that it will both be displayed on the laptop and the tv...
in any event all i see on the tv is my back ground picture thats all no icons or the mouse nothing but the picture..
when i open up the internet nothing shows up on the screen...can someone plzz help me... i bought the male vga cord

Your computer is treating the TV as a second monitor. If you drag windows off your desktop to the right they'll appear on your TV.
